Would you believe over 100%?.

Bob it would be impossible for her to take a cut of 100% or more, first there can't be over 100% :sqwink: second what DJ would work for her for free! If she is taking 50% then anyone that works for her is an idiot and someone needs to turn her in to the IRS, because she is not reporting it all!

i know a certain someone who's gonna make a mockery out of her at the next bridal show... Facebook you amuse me so.

If you charge the client $800 and pay the DJ $300, what is that percentage?

We (us local DJs) know she does it all the time, but the client doesn't. She gets a lot of newer DJs to work for her because she has occasional weekday work.

She's a smart business woman and I don't think she would cheat on her IRS by not reporting traceable income.

It's not a license to perform, it's a license to operate a talent booking agency. My recollection is that the entertainment booking industry needed to be regulated in Jersey. It got nasty sleazy.

Yea, in NJ you need a license if you are a "booking agency" or an "entertainment agency". The definition is fairly vague, and I do not believe it applise to your standard mobile DJ... single or multi-op. If you look at the list of licensed agencies, there are about 15 entertainment, and 7 booking. Of those at least half are talent agencies, 5 are band agencies and 5 are DJs.
Of course in the yellow pages here the State takes out ads saying that DJ's are a regulated industry and to make sure they are licensed. I've never been asked about it though.

Steve M. is correct - being a multi-op does not automatically make you a telant agent. "Agency" is a particular legal term - and employees or subcontractors working under a singular company identity does not constitute an agency relationship.

If you have doubts about your exposure, then simply get the licesne and bond. A $5,000 surety bond will cost you no more than $50 and is good for about 5 years. Someone prior quoted the license in their state at $700 which sounds rather high (most licenses are about $250 annual) however $700 is not a lot of money and the license may be good for 2 to 5 years.

For those that got burned - well, that's the risk you take if you don't cross your T's and dot your i's. You can scream all you want about the tactic employed - but, if the woman caught them with their pants down it's really their own fault.

She is paying the Talent 37.5% of the take and keeping 62.5% for herself, someone needs to check the laws in the state she is in she may be in violation already (she would be in Virginia 35% is the most a Booking agent can take here!

Also someone needs to report her to the IRS because she isn't reporting all of that income (if the law restricts the precentage she can take from a booking)

One of these days she's going to bite more than what she can chew. Karma tends to even things out without waiting too much.
