I was involved with NAME 3 years ago. I only did it for the insurance.
Why on earth would I want to teach other guys how to market themselves better than me? I don't see Kentucky Fried Chicken sharing their secret recipe with Popeyes.

Truth is, there are enough gigs out there for all of us. We ask DJs to leave their egos at home. If you're not willing to share, learn & participate? Maybe an association isn't for you.

Prospects that tend to have better quality events are intelligent consumers that will pay more for educated, professional entertainers that come recommended by others.

Yes, we've had some DJs drop out of our organization, they are usually the guys that don't contribute, don't want to improve themselves/or their DJ/Emcee skills. Some would rather put an ad in the yellow pages & just lowball to the price shoppers...it's easier.

To each his own I guess?

I agree, there will always be enough gigs to go around. Since there are some leads that don't qualify themselves, you can share the love by passing leads off to other companies. However, there are only 10 spots on the first page of Google. I prefer to be in the top 2 (rather than advertise in the yellow pages). All I am saying, is that sharing your marketing plan may not be the best way to further a companies agenda. IMO, it might be a Pandora's box.

I agree with you, it does help raise the standard. I only disagreed with the point you made on marketing.

What would you expect? The industry has low barriers to entry, and everyone thinks they are a superstar. I have no problem with idea sharing on emceeing skills, equipment knowledge, music mixing, vendor relations, customer service, event management, lead sharing, business card redesigns, yadda yadda yadda.

To me, marketing drives the business. I would be concerned about the full-time professionals who have the resources available to 1 up a marketing strategy.

I don't know about you but a lot of the time I try to pass a job off to another DJ I end up getting nothing but grief over it. Can you say "Never look a gift horse in the mouth"?

Bill,

That would be what your chapter does, what you don't know is what every other chapter does!

It could be that the OP has been going to the meetings and all he got from it was, "A bunch of old guys sitting around bitching about bottom feeders"!

A quite astute observation. You got ESP or something?
