Why Use An External vs. Internal HDD

Rob - Man you're an enigma!!

I carry 12000 mp3's on a 160 gig internal drive.

What are you carrying that you need so much space? and why?
I know the answer...because you want to.....honestly, your logic and reasoning puzzles me

Nevermind all the advise...what do we know?

I sincerely hope for the next bride, you are as fortunate as you were on this one....

Rick...you're banging your head on a brick wall here....

I am at this very moment transfering or rather copying my entire library to my laptop.... but, there is no way on God's green earth I wont still be maintaining a minimum of 2 identical external drives.... what bothers me the most is space... I'm going to be looking for a 1tb internal drive if they exist for laptops if I can't get two drives in this one. I still do not like having my music on the same drive as the OP system.

So, why not an internal drive in an external enclosure. When using a laptop this is the way I work.

Yer missing the point of "core" library Rob. Core does not mean all your music, it means the songs you are most likely to play at any given event. Statistically speaking, you will play mostly the same songs at any given event, in any given time period (let's say the month of November).

I've found over the years, that having a couple thousand tracks, will generally cover 99% of the songs I will play at an event. Again, the odd requests can be pulled off the external, without putting unneeded overhead on the computer, and the software.

Other than the core library, you can also create a separate folder on the internal, where you can rotate in and out, the top 40 or so at the given time.

I run all the special music (First dance, Father and daughter dance) from my internal HD of my computer and all my dance music from the external. I keep it alive with your fantastic program Rick. But because of your great ideas and experience. I'm going to take lets say my most popular songs and maybe the top 200 and add a folder on my drive (internal) for those songs. Back ups for all our events include ( 2 computers, 2 external drives, and 2 MP3 CD's.

My mama always told me listen to those that know so I'm listening. One thing that I do is I carry a CD loaded into my CD tray and cued with all our clients special music and one CD with a bunch of dance music. That way if I have any computer problems or HD problems then I can fade to that quickly. I have only used it once but it saved my bacon when I did. My CD player in my rack system will take an MP3 CD which is good to have.

One word: Virus

Huh...? You should have no worries, since your core library is also on your external.

LMAO.... that's what an External Drive IS.

Not if you use an external SATA drive -- then you have a different ballgame entirely. An external SATA (providing you have a port on your computer), will be almost as fast as an internal (slightly slower due to cable length, but not noticeable by you).

Most lappy's do not have external SATA ports though.

Mine does and that was/is the next type of external I will be buying very soon..... maybe after I purchase a cheap laptop...

Just remember that even though those external SATA's are fast, does not mean you might not knock out the connector, or the power supply cable might not come unplugged... They have their caveats as well... ;)

That's why I will always stick with internals :)

ok guys lets look at sizes of laptop hard drives now days!

HDD 160Gb 7200rpm 8Mb SATA

HDD 320Gb 7200rpm 16mb SATA

HDD 320Gb 7200rpm 16mb SATA

HDD 420GB 7200rpm 16mb SATA

HDD 500GB 7200rpm 16Mb SATA

HDD 640GB 7200rpm 16mb SATA

HDD 750GB 7200rpm 32Mb SATA

HDD 800GB 7200rpm 16Mb SATA

HDD 1000gb/1Tb 7200rpm 32Mb

HDD 1500Gb/1.5Tb 7200rpm 32mb SATA

this is just what I can get here

so look at what your OS can use say look at a 60GB partition and
the balance as used for storing the music on

I have one system that has a 640GB hdd the OS is 40GB and the balance is for the storage
the only one I keep my documents on is also the storage drive
I create everything on the C: drive and save everything I create on the D: drive

so look at what you need to use as a os partition and whats needed to store your muisc on!

let me know how you went!

here are the ones for 2.5" HDDs

Notebook HDD 160Gb 2.5" 5400rpm 8Mb SATA

Notebook HDD 250Gb 2.5" 5400rpm 8Mb IDE

Notebook HDD 320Gb 2.5" 5400rpm 8Mb SATA

** Notebook HDD 500Gb 2.5" 5400rpm 8Mb SATA - best option

now work out what you can do!!

My lappy only has a 60 gig HDD so keeping all of my library on board isn't happening. I have been using a Western Digital External HDD for 3 years without incident. I would to not have the extra hookup though. For backup I carry two loaded iPods and I have 4 gigs worth of tunes on my Blackberry. I categorize my ipods and BB into standard playlists, I mean, let's face it, we know the most common wedding songs. We know what's hot in the bars. I usually update my playlists once a month or so using the log from that night's event.

young...

A bunch of words. Your dedicated gig machine should never be exposed to viruses....neither should your legitimately purchased music...

Hence my need for another computer..... for now there is no way around the need to be on the internet... I just avoid unknown sites or sites known to be virus ridden.... heck I don't even open unknown emails on this thing.... I do that on my Cell phone instead... so far as I know there are no Palm OS viruses to date.

You do know that a virus on your laptop is not necessarily confined to the partition your os is on....plugging an external into an infected laptop exposes the contents to the same virus that's on that laptop.....so now you've just infected your external drive, where if you had a virus on that laptop...you could wipe it clean, reformat and recopy the music from that pristine external...

Do we have a brick wall I can beat my had against? :sqerr:.Neither your primary laptop nor back up should be used to surf the net. These are your "business", gig machines......Your "home" machine (the desktop) is the one you surf the net with....

Listen some of us don't have endless amounts of cash laying around to have dedicated machines.... I don't that's for sure... it's nice that some seem to have this endless stash of cash...

I agree that gig machines should generally not be used to surf or email (primary causes of malicious stuff). They should have the ability to attach though, for software activation, updates and the like.

Some people do need dual use machines though, so they should use robust security software that won't interfere -- such as ESET.

It's about recognizing what's important and prioritizing. we're talking $600 bucks for dependable, seam less back up. That should be the number 1 priority...no one has endless amounts of cash;

you don't exactly have sh*t for gear and lights and just bought a van and 2 swarms? :sqwink:

I won't bust your balls any more Rob... Carry on !
