How another DJ saw the new lights?

actually I have a good friend in Pennsylvania who does mostly weddings and believe it or not very succesfully. He doesnt use a single light. He also makes a price near the top of his demographics. I use lights to create activity and it is a tool that works for me. I did many events in the States with little or no lighting. Itisnt even expected here in many cases.

BTW.....give me the stripper for 1 hour not 10 min and I rather look at her then any light show, trust me when I say, it will not be boring to me! Jon can confirm this, can't you Jon? LOL............

Try Tiesto concert, you will last for 3 hours!:sqlaugh:

I care what other DJs think. As long as they share it in a educational way. If I post a pic or a playlist, I am looking for not only validation from my peers, but ideas on how I can make it better.

If people share stuff constructively with me, it's cool and I care what they think.

When I first started I was on a big trip about wanting every light in the catalog. In reality I was using my lighting set up to make up for what I was lacking mixing wise. Fast forward many years later and now my mixing is on point but all of my dj lights are outdated. Now I do not take out any lighting and everyone loves the music.

When I used lighting I only ran my lights in sound mode. Anyone who thinks that the client will care if your are running dmx or not is crazy. They see a light, and to them its just that - a friggin light.

shanefrom302, like your slogan, "your girlfriends favorite DJ" . (LOL)

I started out the same way. Now I just run what I feel like running or if I think the hall needs it. I have all the fancy lights and don't use them all the time. I usually use "wash" and one "FX". This past Friday and Saturday nights, at two separate gigs/halls I used NO lights or FX. (LOL) However, on Saturday I did bring one par can 38 and never used it.

I just started this thread by saying that people/audience don't see what we think they're seeing or what we want them to see. Sometimes in the crowd may be another DJ.

I used to do par cans, but they're too much of a pain to setup and the chaser is too noisy, so I don't have color wash right now. I'll look into fixing that next year. I don't bring a mirror ball anymore because too many venues around here have windows and/or Christmas lights. That's just not worth competing against.

Due to space constraints, low ceilings, and daytime/Christmas lighting anymore, I just bring my ADJ Wave and ADJ Hyperbeam - that's right, a pair of effect lights that run well with the music. I don't use any lighting for slow dances and I either alternate between the two effects lights or combine them, depending upon the song. Sometimes, I add my barrel scanner into the mix.

I've found that people tend to get a little crazier (yes, at weddings) with a darker room and no wash lighting. If I purchase wash lighting, I plan to use it more as a separate effect and likely for just the beginning of open dancing...not sure yet.

EDIT: Back on topic, I don't think people really care about the particular effects. They may have a preference in whether they just want to go simple with either no lighting or some wash lighting (or just want a whole bunch of things), but they don't care how the light works, as long as it works and adds to the mood.

I think we look at things VERY differently if we're in the biz.
I don't think many clients bother with the details...
they just look at their event as a WHOLE.
If everything went well, everything is GOOD
if one LITTLE thing went wrong, it all sucked!

same with our performance...
I don't think they analyze every light, and how it was used in every song...
only WE do that...
and it's usually to make ourselves feel better
:sqlaugh:

It is up to us to see the details, not the big picture. My main pet peeve is when DJs use "DJ" lighting in inappropriate places.

I hate dark "mood" lighting. You can create "mood" without making it so that one person can't see any other person. If I wanted to dance in the dark, I would stay home.

Ok, I'm sorry but just who cares what DJ A thinks of DJ B anyway.... how is their opinions of any use to me... I mean really what is the lesson here? Neither of these two putz DJs are my clients so who cares.

What other DJs do can affect the whole Industry which can include your area and you. For instance, the more we have more amateur bottom feeders, the lower the price can get....yeah yeah yeah... I know, you get what you pay for...but in the meantime the gig is lost. If more DJs continue to give away more services at no extra charge then clients would come to expect more for less. Suppose the majority of DJs in your area started offering Projectors at no extra charge, then one will be forced to go with the flow = added cost of additional gear = diluted revenue!
Yer hear dat!:sqwink:

That all depends on your price point as compared to other similarly priced packages....

For example lets say:

DJ Fee $599.00
Basic Lighting $100.00

Now, bride comes along and goes wellllllllllll I really don't need lights so I'll just book DJ service only... meanwhile the lights gather dust. No ROI

Change your price points and eliminate the separate add-on:

DJ Service w/ Free Basic Lighting Package: $699.00

Plus you can do add ons for upgraded lighting etc... and...

Now, bride goes.... cool I can get a DJ and Lighting in one package AWESOME.... now my lights go out... I make money on them and guess what same price.... go figure.... it works.

Prices posted here don't necessarily represent any person or companies prices and are for example purposes only.

I just bought a pair of par can 64 LED lights. I have them set up in the studio and I'm thinking leaving the rest of the lights at home and just using the LED 64's. No more lights shining down from the stage, just par cans aimed up to the ceiling to create the mood. Run them DMX.
