My main PC in my office has suddenly gotten real slow online. My DJ lappy uploads and downloads just fine so i know its not my internet connection.
I have done all the obvious, deleting cache, temp files, cookies etc. My question is, can this be a cause of a malfunctioning internet card? Mine is built in, not the slot kind. Late last year I had the computer reconfigured and updated with more memory etc and it was working just fine until fairly recent. I swapped out cables etc and the problem still persists. Any thoughts?

How old is your Windows install? After a while everything lags and the best bet is to reinstall and get your speed back.

I would pick that before an internet card from my experience the cards either work or don't

The most common cause of a sudden decrease in performance is a spyware or virus infection. Do you run anti-virus and anti-spyware software and do they updates their definition files daily? Have you run a full scan lately?

My recommendations in the no cost category are:
Malware bytes as a spyware scanner/cleaner.
Spybot for anti-spyware protection and simple cleaning.
Avast for anti-virus.

The safest cleaner for the new, nasty virus infections is a complete wipe & reload. Even the big boys of the anti-virus world have stated that they cannot guarantee the cleaning of a system infected with conficker and some of the the related virii that adapt quickly and hide too well to be hidden. they may appear to have been cleaned, but a couple of days later the infection come back due to an undetected loader pulling down a new virus.

Good luck.

I had a complete re-install done in November. What troubles me is that it did not gradually slow down, one day it was working fine and then now it is so slow (Only online)
I cannot play a u-tube video on it or mpeg from the internet. It runs for 4 seconds stops for about the same time and then runs for another 4 seconds etc.

I have McAfee and it updates itself automatically. No virus has been found when I do a scan.

Houston,
Stop downloading so much PORN!!!!! :sqlaugh::rofl::sqlaugh::rofl::sqlaugh:

:sqwink::sqwink::sqwink:

Seriously run Spybot Search & Destroy, there's definitely some malware in there.

What triggered the slowness? Did you just update or change something? If so, start rolling those changes back. If not I would check for some sort of infection. If McAfee is still running and it doesn't detect anything in a manual scan I would guess that you have spyware/malware. (The more complex viruses disable anti-virus software, so that's a clue that you are infected.) What do you run for anti-spyware software? Anti-virus only does half of the job, spyware is a similar, but categorized differently as many of them claim to have legitimate purposes and some even ask permission to be installed, so anti-virus companies cannot legally tag them as a virus.

McAfee does have a software suite which includes anti-spyware, but you may only have anti-virus protection from them so you need to check. You should also be aware that there is no anti-spyware software which is 100% effective, paid or free, none of them catch everything. To be truly safe you would need a combination of multiple anti-spyware products and be web smart and not click on dubious links and only load helper apps from well known vendors such as Adobe, Microsoft and Sun Java. In reality running multiple protection apps will slow down your system noticeably and your best protection is running one and being very smart about what you click on.

Personally I prefer Spybot Search & Destroy which is more encompassing than most of the paid apps, but it requires the user to manually run updates. Not matter which anti-spyware software you use, I would scan your machine with malware bytes. http://www.malwarebytes.org/ and download the free version.

If everything scans clean, I would then start looking at the network card, it's drivers and the cabling.

I downloaded and ran Malwarebytes and it found no instances of Malware. I am using XP Pro.

Are you on a Router?

Are you on a Router?

Yes I am on a router but even when I bypass it the PC does the same thing. The lappy in the next room works just fine wireless from the router.

If the laptop is wireless and the PC is wired, test the laptop on the same wire as the PC to rule that out.

Already did. The Laptop is fine. The problem is in the PC.

If the router is a Belkin do a software update and see if that makes a difference. I had the opposite problem here a while back the Lappy was slow on the net and the PC was fine. Software update solved the problem.

I still say though it's probably a Windows lag and a reinstall would fix all

I have a linksys. I did the reinstall thing last year and my only consolation was keeping the old drive in the pc and adding a new C drive. I still refer to the old drive from time to time for stuff.

So far I have seen Scott suggest the best way out

so i'll leave him to give the Advice

But please follow the suggestions.....

also that old drive could have been infected now its spread to the new Hard drive

ok gotta go a client here has been hit with a crappy virus (she opened an email of all things) I'll say no more!

If it was me I would do a reinstall and go from there. You can spend hundreds of hours trying to fix small annoyances or get it over with with a reinstall in an hour

I generally reinstall every 3 months or so. I can notice a difference in internet speed with a fresh install
