Tacky DJ Advertising???

Hmmm. does having a small tasteful sign like the one shown say to the guest (potential clients) that this is a person working for a named company and not working on his own?

Does it add any credibility? Just thinking...

And no, I do not use any signeage (or a facade for that matter)...but cards are available for the asking.

It can certainly add some credibility (or lack of) if the company is consistent. People might be impressed that a company has so many djs that do a good job....could come back the opposite too. When I managed a multi op, it was a good thing to have recognition. We were big in the area....it instilled confidence in the type and quality of service we delivered. yes, we had a tasteful logo displayed with no ph/web. Just a name.

To me his signage looks more like a way to identify his equipment as belonging to said company.... really not that much different than haveing say a coke can appear in your pictures or a long neck Bud.....do you think they worry about their product placement in your photo's? I don't think so.... probably never really crosses their minds but any advertisement is good.

Like what has been said.... putting up a huge banner that is blatent advertisement with things like "Hire us we are the other white meat" then ya that's tacky.

I don't do signs at private events, wedding/non-wedding, formal/non-formal, never have, and never will.

If people in attendance are in NEED, or know someone who is, and your performance is exemplary, a point will be made to get with you, and they will most certainly know who to contact after the fact to get your info.

If you're really worth hiring, rehiring & referring, in-your-face advertising at an private event is not necessary.

That event is about the guests of honor and the occasion itself - not you. That you benefit from it after the fact (or that you DON'T/WON'T) will be determined by your performance and the impression left on your clients and their guests, and should be viewed a happy coincidence if it occurs.

Me myself, I'm there to play a supporting role - not a leading one. Who I am, in the end, is insignificant, and will be sought out and/or passed along during and after the event if my performance merits it.

But I know many dj's have far greater perceptions of themselves and their supposed roles and importance at their events.:sqcool::sqlaugh:

I kind of read it the opposite way, meaning that the signs are there because you worry that you ARE forgettable.

Dude, call our suicide hotline immediately!

Operators are standing by to take your order... :sqlaugh:

Yea, while I personally don't do it, I wouldn't condemn this particular photo or DJ for doing it, it's fairly small and seems tasteful. I will condemn them for hiring The Pros, haha. :sqeek:

So is it tacky for a band to have the bass drum with the band name on it. I remember during the big band era, they all had the stations with the band name on it. I personally if done well can be very classy looking. Now a big banner would be different.

But then again I think it is OK to dance into a wedding ceremony!!

I see it like driving a Ford Mustang and putting a huge FORD oval in the rear window. Come on a Mustang is recognizable anywhere and we know who makes them :D:D:D:D:D

I personally don't like blatant vendor advertisement and private formal events, there's a time and a place for everything and in this type of events having a small card holder with Business cards is acceptable :D:D:D

If it works for this company and the client doesn't mind or care, then more power to them.

For me, it's not something I'd do. We place a small business card holder on our "station", leave pens with our name on them for people to steal, our request cards have our name/logo on each one, and my white dress shirts have our logo embroidered on them. Those are things that some might consider tacky, but that's the way we roll.:sqwink:

I am appalled that The Westin Bayshore one of Vancouvers most high class Hotels has their Logo on their podium used for toasts and MCs for any occasion. How Cheesy of them. Oh yeah couple weeks ago same thing at the Four Seasons Hotel and even the Marriott. I wonder if that ruined many a wedding picture over the years?

Gee, guess I should've started this as a poll...;)

Thanks all for your feedback. As with most questions, there sometimes are no clear-cut answers.

The reference to the drum head signage vs a large banner, that's fine.

But it seems that some like to go overboard - I never mentioned anything about the facility's monogram, restaurant menu's, etc.

Never said branding is tacky - but there's a difference between personal branding & company branding. Right?

I don't think DJs have a problem with branding, but like everything there is a time & place that's appropriate.

Cheers,

Joe
