I have a question...

Let's say you have all your songs on an external hard-drive and you want to update your laptop's library. When you hook it up and go to copy the files, Windows tells you that the file already exists and asks you if you'd like to replace it. If you say NO, it asks you again for each and every file. If you say YES, it will ask you if you'd like to do the same for all of them. It works and will replace all the files but is their any way to do it that will simply add the new files and leave the ones that exist on both the external and the laptop? I find it to be a waste of time to replace all the files each time...

Any advice from you computer Guru's would be appreciated.

Yes.... and it's free!

I just found this: http://www.online-tech-tips.com/cool-websites/windows-no-to-all/

Basically, you just hold down the SHIFT key and then click NO. That's all there is to it! Nice...

But that ignores anthing new done to the file.... what if you had decided to re-rip a few of your music files for consistancy in bit rates..... doing what you are doing will ignore file updates since they are still named the same.

Latshaws file syncronizer not only looks at the file name but also the date last updated or created to decide if it should update or skip the file.

Good points Rob. I downloaded the program onto my back up laptop to give it a go. How do you sync using that program? I'm afraid to click on the wrong button...

Pretty much just as it shows in the screen shots.... Use Clone Mode for what you are trying to do then after you can simply sycronize the files....

In the left choose your the directory you want to syncronize from.... include subdirectories.... then choose your destination directory on the right.

It will then look at what's in the left directory and compare it to the right and only update new or changed files.

It is real quick too....

If you need some PORTABLE Sync programs let me know

I tried both and I'm leaning towards Sync Toy. It is VERY easy to use. I like how you can name each configuration, like Main Laptop to Back Up Laptop Music Library or External HD Music Library to Back Up Laptop. Then the next time you use it, you can simply choose one and let it do it's thing without thinking about it. Nice...

Thanks again!

I tried tranfering from a HD to a laptop but how would I go about connecting 2 laptops together to use Sync Toy? Would I simply connect the two together using an Ethernet cable?

To connect directly without a router or switch, you need a crossover Ethernet cable (the wires are crossed to allow a direct connection).

There are other ways with USB cables, and what not...

I'd just get a router or switch, since it has a lot more functionality, and they are almost as cheap as dirt.

FolderClone.com and it's awesome!!!
