When should I send out "thank you" cards?

Let me start with a little background:

This past weekend I ended up doing a much nicer event than I had anticipated. It was a college graduation party. They booked me at a good price (for an up-sell sound system) and they paid me an awesome tip after the job was finished.

I have a feeling I will most likely get a referral or two from them, as the girl is soon to be engaged and they've already planted the seed that they will most likely be looking for a DJ for her wedding.

So, considering how well they "took care of me" and how much fun I had doing their party, I'd really like to foster a good relationship with them.

This brings me back to the question. When should I send it? ASAP? Or wait a week or two? I'm assuming it should be hand-written rather than an e-mail note.

Any thoughts, ideas and/or suggestions?

I would send it out ASAP. But I would also follow up with a general "note or how's things going" card in about 4-6 months. Don't let them forget who you are.

You can do like I do and use the business "Send Out Cards" to manage your clients.

Send em a box of brownies and card in your own handwriting from you computer with a couple keystrokes in about 2 minutes. No running around for a gift or finding postage. Just click and move on.

Follow up as often as you like. You can even attach Gift Cards or many other gifts to choose from.

Simple and very easy to manage your time.

I also routinely just purchase a bunch of nice one-year anniversary cards and and send them out to them in the weeks prior to their first anniversary.

No need to brand or include cards here - that would be ultra-tacky.

This communique is PERSONAL and it is received really well.... they love it, and my getting in touch with them at that point has led to at least one referral booking that I know of for sure.

I used to send out a 1 year anniversary email, but after a couple of bad replies, I've let that go.

Had one bride reply back the that SOB had cheated on her and they were divorced , and one where he had been killed in a car crash about 2 months earlier, but she did appreciate me thinking about them.

Hey, I've heard that there's this thing called Send Out Cards....Oh nevermind..it's been mentioned before....

We've gotten good responses from clients, especially when they get a SOC with a teaser of one of their photos to put on their mantle .. And yes, whatever you do, do it ASAP. You can always do a followup later. Strike while the iron is hot.
