DMX Software / Controller Questions?

I use Chauvet Show Express. Software is free to try. They have a 3d Visualizer (which I haven't fully figured out yet) and the cost is the dongle. If you only need to control a small number of lights (say 15 addresses) then I picked up the dongle from Ben at NLFX for I think around $225 or $250. I love it and have recently been programming more scenes for my lights with it. Can't believe I waited this long to go to a software controller over a hardware one. It's outstanding!

Im going Show Express as mentioned above. Why jump on the hardware bandwagon and be a Luddite lol. Software BaBY!!

I just began using the American DJ "MY DMX" PRODUCT. It does everything I could want from a DMX controller.

I purchased 2- X-Move Fixtures @ $599 each, and got the DMX software and dongle for free!

Chauvet Obey 70....

Why? I wanted to get the hang of manual control before I went went the software route.

Cost...about $200

We were using Sunlite before. We saw it at a convention and liked it.
After using it, it just didn't seem to be the right fit for what we needed. We had considered ShowXpress previously, (especially since Barry who was with Chauvet promised us that a Mac version was coming out, which never did) but never followed up on it.

Fast Foward to Ben's DMX seminar in Vegas this year... When he started talking about TimeLine.. OMG! Mike and I just looked at each other and said: "that's the one!"

So we got ShowXpress, from Ben of course... and he actually helped train us on it (and conducted a DMX training with a heavy focus on ShowXpress for us, our staff, and some local collegues)

I am still learning it's awesome power but love it to death!

Here's video of Ben, when he came out to help us (in case you haven't seen it yet.) I specially edited the footage for Ben as a Thank You for what he did for us!:

I've been running Freestyler with a Velleman dongle.

Pros: Cheap - software is free and dongle was ~$75
Cons: Learning curve for software. Freestyler takes some getting used to. I'm still clueless on most things, but I can get my lights to run like I want them.

I'm just finding that out..... today for example I just figured out how to grab my scanners and set them to Sound Active from within Freestlyer....

That's how I'm running my Revo 3 and (2) 200b's - sound only controlled through Freestyler. :sqwink: I run the 200b's through some chases to suit pace of the music some. I wish I could get my moving heads (ADJ 250) to run sound through Freestyler. My "programming" skills leave alot to be desired.

With any of the scanners just grab both then click on the speaker icon.... check mark Random DMX.... Check Pan/Tilt then click Start adjust your sensitivity from there and use you mic input as the source..... that's how I did it today.

There are a couple of good video tutorials on youtube about both the sound active mode and shapes.... that are very useful.

Programming is very easy in Freestyler. You don't need "skills", just desire to learn. I just reprogrammed the 200b and rain 56 (added more options) and created a brand new fixture, the mega bar rgb 50. It took me maybe 3 hours messing around without reading any "how to" material.

I am going SHOWEXPRESS I hope my minimal mind can comprehend.

It's a great program JT!
I'm still learning, but I know what it's capable of and am willing to get there... Plus, anytime I have a problem, Ben is kind enough to walk me through it.

Too bad I can't always have him running the light show for me... I could've gotten used to that! Perhaps I should book my gigs based upon where Ben is installing that week... and make him stay over on the weekends! LOL :sqwink:

You won't be able to run the tri-phase and revo III in the sound active mode with DMX in macros. That option does not exist.
You can do it with the 200B and ADJ mega led bar.

I will get my revo back on weekend and will check how the freestyler own sound active program works.
I never bother to check out this option simply because I was happy with revo's buil in program but now I wonder!
