Finally! Looking at new speakers..Considering HPR152i

I've been talking about it forever, and now i'm in a position to get some new speakers. I have decided that I am willing to try active speakers to eliminate some of the weight of my rack, and the complexity of setting up and tuning my system before a show.

I really like the HPR122i speakers and the HPR152i, but I've found cons to both that I don't like.

With the HPR122i, the problem I have is that first its maximum spl is 131db, where as other speakers like the 152i are much higher (135db) and I really want ALOT of headroom with these speakers, thats one of the goals I've got in getting speakers, I want to be able to play to alot of people and not have to worry about not enough volume. The second thing I don't like is that because of its conical horn, it doesn't disperse the highs as wide as others speakers, at only 75 degrees horizontal and vertical.

With the HPR152i, I like it because its loud, has great dispersion, and gives great full range response which leads to more events without subs. The big problem is that its 100lbs...and I know I could manage it but I'm scared that in a few months either it'll fall through a ceiling or I'll get sick of lifting it and go back to using Yamahas to save my back. Even with this, I'm leaning more towards these because I know they will cover a larger audience.

So I'm asking, what would you guys recommend? Ben, is there a model of speaker that is in the same price range you would want me to consider?

Thanks, and I hope to be buying a new pair within a month! Stay tuned! haha

You won't get amp headroom with active cabinets. :)

Yes, there's a difference between active's and passives, but that's another thread and discussion, if you want headroom your system is going to have to be passive in order for you to decide what you want to feed to each cabinet.

The actives don't let you do that when the cabinet clips you have no extra nothing. With the passive systems you can use a huge amp get the true power though the cabinet and not even get close to clipping the amp.

Yes there are advantages to active systems, but I've tried both and went back to passive.

What is your price range per speaker? The max you want to pay?

Brian,
What do you have in your rack at this present time that you are trying to eliminate or reduce? Remember, whether the system is active or passive, the amp will only reproduce/amplify the signal that it is fed. Therefore processing is also important.

Right now I've got a Rane Compressor/Limiter, BBE Crossover, and Art stereo graphic EQ. I want to eliminate all that, and replace them with a DRPA along with the new speakers. I also have 2 amps, and I want to eliminate one, and until I could get active subs, keep my PLX for my MRX subs.

Brian,
What type of events do you target?

Mostly big teen events, everything from bar mitzvahs to school dances.

Maybe you can build a second system, train a Buddy to DJ and use it and make more money. You will make more from the use vs selling it as used gear! If you have to do a real big gig, then just combine the two rigs! plus your buddy can help you.

I've thought of that, but finding the right guy, and being able to guarantee him bookings is something I'm not quite at yet. One month I'll be turning down gigs because I'm completely full, the next month I'll have 2 weeks in a row that are dead.

Or the buddy can screw you.

Careful! Multi-oping sounds easier than it is.
Sometimes finding the right guy may sound good now, but in 9 months, will your buddy still have the same enthuisim?

It happened to a fellow DJ friend of mine. He trained his buddy & took on a lot of extra gigs. 8 months later, his buddy flaked out on him & left him holding the bag.

I have an HPR122i that I use for a floor monitor for karaoke and I have two HPR153i's.

The 153's are quite hell to drag around but I love the sound so I find that it's worth it.

I love the 122's, they have great sound but if you need wide coverage (as you said) the conical horns don't provide you with as much spread. It all depends on your needs.
If you're afraid that you might get sick of lugging the speakers around chances are you might. Maybe you'd be interested in the new K series?

Very true, and that's an issue I'm not ready to deal with. I don't have very many friends I would trust with my company name, and the last thing I want is for someone to show a lot of enthusiasm now, and me get him gear and all trained up, and then have him quit a few months later for other priorities.

That was one of my biggest worries with the HPR122i, the dispersion, how big is the difference, would you run yours as mains?

As far as the K series, I'm not completely sold on them yet, my GC rep is setting up a demo between the HPR122i and the K12 later this month, so if they hold up to my expectations of what a QSC should sound like I might consider them.

Brian -

I have a pair of 152s in stock with your name on them. ;) My only drawbacks with these speakers are how heavy they are. If weight is not a concern, they're a pretty robust 15" 2-way, good for the money. If you want to step up from those, I'd suggest the EV ZXa5s. Lighter, louder, and better sounding... but quite a bit more $$.

Ben I PM'd you!

I'd like to thank everyone for their insight and advice, in addition I'd like to thank Ben who took time to talk to me about the two and some possible alternatives over the phone. I've made my decision, so if all goes to plan I'll be ordering a pair of HPR152i's from NLFX about the end of this month, hopefully in time for a few school events I've got going in June!
