Adding to what Fred has said, I have been booked on several weddings where the B&G didn't have a clue as to where the reception was going to take place or who the Caterer was going to be as the DJ was the first thing they booked.

I have done many weddings here that the DJ budget was 80% of total wedding budget the $200 VFW fee was second! Many of the weddings done in this area the catering is done by the familes themselves the money is spent on entertainment. I find that the DJ budget is much higher for VFW hall weddings with the "poor folks" (common folks) than it is for upscale hotel ballroom and vineyard weddings!

Different people have different priorities! My preference is that I'd rather do the VFW style functions. Lots more fun!

I like keeping my parts all covered

My thinking is that in the contract something should have been written that at no time will this ever be verbally or written as a free event for my services. If you say that you will be held responsible for the FULL balance due. Once everyone hears free thats what everyone wants.

Now if they were bartering a service, to me thats different. I just put some advertising out and got an up grade in color...what do I do...I play their customer appreciation party on a wednesday night for free. The customers are other businesses that could potentially use my service in the future. They are inviting 400 customers, anticipating at least 200 to show, they've done this before but never with a dj there. But again I got something in return....I bartered and feel at this time I got something with potential for more.

The flip side is that sometimes you want to play a venue but have no means to get in. This might also be a chance to impress the venue management. In the long term it could work out for you.....is it a gamble yes....if they are just breaking into this market or into weddings...might be a good gamble. But again I go back to my first statement....
