Right amp for the job?

Just got a couple of Yamaha S115V's from a dj going outta buisness (retiring)...there like new condition rarley used 400 for both em...not bad IMHO

but I need to know a good amp to use...Not top of the line but I want to get as close to there potential as possible...Looking for an amp under 300 if possible this is just gonna be a setup I use for smaller dances and maybe reinforced sound.

Right now I have a Pyrimid pa1000x amp...and I dont like it at all

But ive been using Eons latley for gigs (my buddies) and there powered so it has just been sitting there
 
Or a PLX but you want to be careful with it. You'll have lots of headroom but you could do some serious damage if you crack it open

I'd strongly recommend a PLX1802 amp. I got mine for around $500 so its a little over budget, but the thing is very powerful and a perfect match for those speakers. Not to mention its 13lbs!

600watts/8 ohms stereo, 900 watts/4 ohms stereo

13 lbs sounds nice hahah

I want to keep these speakers safe though, even if there not the loudest theyd go I dont want to run the risk of blowing anything

im gonna look at the PLX1802 though and the QSC

Really there isn't a way to do that. Your logic is to get an amp that doesn't have enough power to "blow" your speakers, but in reality underpowering speakers can be as dangerous as overpowering them. When you underpower speakers, sooner or later you will push the amp and cause it to distort and clip. These clipping and distortion sounds will actually do more harm to a speaker then feeding it its top amount of power. If your really worried about keeping the levels safe, get a limiter or driverack which includes a limiter.
 
QSC RMX2450 or a PLX2 1804 or a Yamaha P5000. I have 2 pairs of the S115V's and when I use single pairs I power them with the RMX (I've got 2 of them) if I use both pairs I run them with a PLX2 3102 never had a problem, hell I've also tested them with my Yamaha P7000, cranked them up clean without hitting the clip light and they ran perfectly well.

EDIT: I think Brian is referring to the PLX2 1804 not the 1802.

no offence to anyone but thats probley the most usefull information ive ever recived on here

I always though underpowering was the safe way to go

When an amp is pushed beyond it's ability to supply "power" to the speakers it puts out distorted "square" frequency waves rather than sine waves wich are rounded. That's why they call it clipping, because the square looking waves are clipped off at the top and bottom. These distorted waves can damage your speakers.

Having an amp that is more powerful will only damage your speakers if you crank up the volume too high. If you use some reasonable discretion and play your speakers at reasonable volume levels you'll be fine.

The S115V speakers are 8 ohms and rated at 250/500/1000. If you get an amp that pushes at least 500 watts per channel you'll be ok, but one that puts out 800 or 900 watts per channel at 8 ohms will give you what these guys refer to as "headroom". The speakers will sound better and those Yamahas will crank.

You got a very good deal on those speakers, just don't get a hernia lifting them.

One amp to consider is the Samson PG3800. It puts out a lot of power and it's right around $300, call NorthernlightFX, they will hook you up. Ask about the QSC GX5 too although it's not a super high powered amp. It can run those S115Vs,but be like Tim Allen on tool time, "more power!"

If you can wait a little while, Peavey is coming out with a new line of super lightweight amps and from what I've read they are very reasonably priced. When they will be out is anyone's guess, I haven't been able to get any information on that.

Also, Behringer just came out with a new amp, the EP4000 that would kick so much a$$ with your speakers, $350 street price, very powerful amp too. Good luck!

Thanks I did mean the 1804...I switch those two all the time....
