Have you thought about when you will no longer DJ? What will you do after you stop? How much longer do you hope to DJ?

I would like to get 5 more years in. After that I hope to be retired from DJing and my FT job.... and just do things I enjoy doing..... maybe a PT job. Or maybe just do bubble parties because I enjoy those.

Like Jon I will retire from DJing when they pry that last CD from my cold dead fingers!

46 now i'll be around for a few years yet before fully retiring (Semi retired now)

Papa : Oh boy. Hate to say it but all indications and preferences are pointing to wrapping up the active pursuit of events perhaps as early as June, 2010 and wrap up the formal aspect of a what will be then, a 32 year career.

As Thunder mentioned, I will continue to selectively perform but only as a part time mobile DJ whose full time job is enjoying the phenomena I've had almost none of for three decades...weekends...with wife, family, and friends.

And the a/v side of my company will be expanded (weekday stuff) and then also pursue growing and expanding the Bose L1 sales side of my business (weekday stuff).

My previously substantial six figure IRA/SEP accounts have dwindled to itty bitty five figures. Not doing something to augment retirement funds is out of the question till I'm 102.

If none of that works, "Paper or plastic?"

Well said Cap, And it may come the time that you must learn to live off the land!

Thunder :
may come the time that you must learn to live off the land!
Do you mean after the next Civil War? We all will.

I'm hoping that none of what history has shown us from the past is due to repeat again. But if it does, I'm moving with Rick. Hell, I might do that anyway.

I'm already retired -- but like Cap -- I keep my hand in the game ;)

I could certainly make much more money in other areas, but I enjoy what I do, and the folks are fun to work with. And, I make a fair living at it -- seasonable, but it works :)

I could never retire totally to some place, and not be involved in the music biz, in some way, shape or form. It's been a large part of my life since I was old enough to spell Elvis

Also, I'm a ham!

So, as long as I am capable of doing so -- you will find me in this biz :sqcool:

Joey : I thought it was Keeshka di**?

(BTW, the small sausage we could not think of is kabanosy.)

That should do it, Kapusta Face.

Cap,

Hire some young roadie to do your setups and tear downs, you do the planning and show up and run the job, let the roadie come back in and pack it all up and take it away.

Mike

Mike : It's not the physical stuff at all. I love that part. Hell, I'd roadie for part time pay locally. Lord knows I know what I'm doing.

It's the ever changing market. It's the speed of technology. It's the babysitting the clueless. It's the constant looking over the shoulder at how close competition is getting. It's the need to continually reinvent one's self to keep the edge, the lead, the reputation.

Actually, it sounds like I should find an agent or work for a multi. Hmmmm.

Joey: No. Johnny's is a family business. He and his son run it, but Johnny's son (the DJ and front man) and grandchildren are the labor as well as up-and-coming stars. Johnny does all the sales as well as the on-prem video stuff and lights.

I have my days like anyone wrapped up in this business...

Get fed up with cheap azz people, working weekends, holidays,etc...
And think to myself..."to Hell with it all, i'm selling this crap while i still have my sanity"
Then, you have a really great show....And you get that DJ buzz again....

Yep, you know what i'm talking about........

I have many, many years left in front of me....I don't do this for money, or to
fool myself that i'll be rich someday from doing it either.
I DJ and run sound because i LOVE it. And nothing more. If i should make a ton of money doing something that i absolutely LOVE?? Then i'm the happiest guy in the world.

I plan to set my sights on the school market here very soon....As i have a soft spot for them..(where i got my start)
It's about time the kids get a real show around here...

When, i'm too old to lug around my "old school" subs and amp racks..
I'll hire some roadies....Pass the torch to them.
