Was there a written contract or is this a handshake type of performance?

I always give invoices to my clients and would never book anyone who wasn't going to give me an invoice. You just can't do business with a handshake in today's marketplace.

Mike : I believe you are not a DJ but do provide high end lighting. Do you simply invoice a project or do you contract AND invoice?

Mike,
That maybe true in your line of work but I've been working with clients for many years now and a handshake is all it takes. It may not be for everyone but it works for me. I still have many people who's integrity and trust I cherish.

Just a side note, in some states (Indiana being one of them) a verbal agreement between two parties that is witnessed by a third party is legally binding as well.

All service jobs get:
Estimate/Scope of Work/Contract/Invoice/Receipt

All sales get:
Estimate/Invoice/Receipt

Mike : Makes sense. Are your service jobs state taxed where you are?

I don't know about that.... it's still a he said/she said situation even with a so called witness.... I don't think I'd rest my money on winning a lawsuit if someone don't pay.... or vice versa you get sued for non-performance...

My word is my bond doesn't quite get er done these days anymore.

Bond
James Bond Licensed to Thrill....................
No verbals here unless your the major cell and cable companies. Verbal contracts over the phone are almost exclusive here.

it was just a hand shake, my aunt is a teacher there and is the one who put the dance together so I wasnt worried about it. The only other place I have DJ'ed so far has been my sisters and well no contracts there either.

They just needed a bill so they can put it in the system because every dollar has to be accounted for with the interm-principal.

Thanks tho i got one and it was great. Also the preformance was a blast. We got alot of the teachers in on the dances, also did a limbo contest, the train, and the kids even did there own dance off infront of the dj table it was great...

Ahhhhhhhh the taste of succes.... how sweet the nector.

I never do a gig without a contract, but I'm not a stickler for invoices or statements, though I will provide them gladly upon request, or if I can tell the client is just "that type."

I have one generic sheet I put together in excel to serve as a statement / invoice, and I usually just make it up, password protect it, and email it as an attachment to the client, or print a copy. Pretty low-tech. I suppose I should be working it up as a PDF, but it doesn't really come up enough to matter.

I had to save the template as a word doc to upload here.

Matthew: Sounds as though you're fairly new to mobile DJing, and perhaps young with little to no business training nor business background.

Making people conga is a trip. Losing your ass in court due to ignorance is another trip.

Use a contract or agreement of understanding, signed, for every event you do not on your own property. This DJ thing is not like mowing lawns for pocket change. One unfortunate tiny mishap can put you and whatever assets you now own or might have, in jeopardy.

It is insane to do any legitimate event, even a free one or for immediate family, without a contract. I repeat...INSANE!
