I just had this in my email. He was a referral from a wedding I did in 2008.

Dear Chuck,

My fiance and I are getting married on New Year's Eve, of this year. I saw you as a DJ for my buddy Rob's wedding ( to Denise ). We had a great time and I took one of your cards, and was hoping you could do our wedding. It will be near Kutztown, PA, and we need you to DJ for about 5 hours. The reception will be held at Moselem Springs Inn.

We expect to need you for about 5 hours, and we will have about 40 - 50 guests.

Please get back to us ASAP.

Bill E.

BTW, we loved your sound system!

OK, so I didn't post the entire message.... but let me tell you some details.... This event is nearly 60 miles from my home.... If there is snow, there are MANY treacherous roads I would need to drive to get there.

I am familiar with this place as I graduated from Kutztown U..... This is a rather high end venue, if you can call it that. Mostly it is an old, historic restaurant... rather small, and I am even surpised they can hold weddings there. I once took a date there for dinner and we spent over $100 in 1986, without drinks! ( But including tip )

So, here is the rest of the email:

We have really overspent what we can afford for wedding, but we're hoping it will all work out. Since you are good friends with Rob ( I'm really not, but I did know him prior to his booking me to DJ ), and I am good freinds with Rob, I was hoping that you could help us out by helping us to meet our total budget. That would mean that we would need to book you for no more than $400, and if it could be even less, that would be AWESOME!!!

:sqlaugh::sqlaugh::sqlaugh: New Year's Eve... 60+ miles away for less than $400.....

I actually did respond with the following: ( I guess I could have lied to make him feel better, but that ain't like me )....

Bill,

Thanks for your interest, but to be 100% honest, NYE is a premium value, and potentially dangerous night. If I don't book an event for at least $800, I would rather be home with my family. Take care, and good luck.

I don't blame you, Papa. Not one bit.

Wolfie may be reading this wrong... but from what I'm reading, this guy is trying to get you to go cheap because he's friends (or so he says) with a past client.:wtf:

Not to be stirrin' up no worth stuff or nothin'... but what is it with these people who willingly fork over real money for a venue then expect someone to DJ in it for a tenth of that? And on NYE to boot??

Nope. I can't say I blame you one little bit. :)

Champagne drinkers with a beer drinker's budget!

$400 for New Year's eve, and a wedding to boot?

They are out of their minds!

Well, I did what I can to educate him as far as NYE..... $800 is NOT a lot in this area for NYE even with the economy being what it is... I have a buddy of mine who DJ'd this past NYE, and he charged $1600.... exactly double his normal rate.... but he did book it before the economy took a nose dive.

And Papa is supposed to fall for the old economy story, huh?

Let's see if I got this right... it's an upscale venue. Somebody had to fork over the big bucks to book it for NYE. Wasn't no economy issue then, now was it?

Sorry, folks but I'm not buying it. ;)

Wow $400...Even here the going rate NYE is $600 and we book at $700+ with no problem. Generally I turn down several offers for NYE every year

might as well they said,DJ for free and we will buy you gas.its 60 miles away for starters.i guarantee you working for just a few bucks for the 5 hrs they need you for.

It's nice when friends who know friends you know want you to screw yourself. I wish I had more friends like that.

You should have said that since we know the same friend heck I'll do it for free. However there will be a $1600 travel and expense charge, but I'll throw in the reception music just because I'm a nice guy.

His PERSONAL economy, I guess..... :sqerr:

Papa that was a great reply. He compliments the sound system and expects you to DJ for that low. If he had any sense he would ask the groom you DJed for how much he paid for you and then ask for that price.

No offense Papa but I dont think you educated him at all. One of two things will happen...they will look for someone else or the budget will grow miraculously. Now something else that caught my attention....you said you didnt know they could hold weddings there....is it possible he is the guy running the place and was trying to get his NYE dj booked early...just a thought

Well, let's say, then, that I did what I could as politely as I can.... Whether it means anything, well, that is a different story.

Dear Delusional Cheapskate,

Thank you for your kind words, which I suspect are more to garner favor than an actual, honest appraisal. While I would truly welcome the opportunity to provide our professional service, which you claim to have enjoyed, I must inform you that your budgetary limits and mismanagement are no concern of mine.

Your offer is, at the least, insulting and so much so that I am compelled to inquire where you get the nerve to request such consideration with any expectation of acceptance?

Despite your, alleged, favorable experience with our service, have you been so under impressed with other DJ's performances that you assume we all are so desperate for work that we would accept less compensation from you than we have from our trusted, valuable and established clients and friends?

Do you assign so little value to the entertainment of your guests and the coordination of your important celebration that you assume we will willingly accept the leftover funds, no matter how few you leave?

Since you expect me to consider and conform to your budgetary parameters, please provide a breakdown of the entire budget so that I can determine if there are any items I can red line to free up some funds so that you can better afford my service. It is the least one friend can do for another, right?

That is what I would be thinking as I drafted my actual response:
Dear Chuck,

Thank you for the kind words. Denise and Rob's reception was certianly fun and memorable. I would welcome the opportunity to give you, your fiancé, your family and important guests a wedding celebration worthy of such reviews.

New Year's Eve 2009 is currently available. Our fee for that date, your chosen venue and duration is <insert your undiscounted fee + any upcharges for travel and date considerations>.

I look forward to your call and reserving your date on our calendar.

Sincerely,

No other communications are necessary.

wow. I liked Rox's response...

But Chuck, if you hear back from them, let us know...

Yup. Rocky's thinking goes along with my own. Honestly, some people think they can dicker with car salesmen and DJs.

The thing that irritates me about this contact ~ he seems to have no issues with the cost of the venue. It could be the bride, too... ya never know.

But still, it's an insult to Papa's intelligence. It's like they're saying "We already shot our wad on the important stuff and hope you'll be OK with a bone tossed your way." :(

Cue the Three Stooges... "I'll give you a bowl of soup... if you're good!"

"I hope the soup's good."

Fred, you know what is funny? I actually got ABOVE my rate for the party he was at...... I was contemplating a price increase, and decided not to, but what came out of my mouth HAD the price increase! :sqerr::sqlaugh:... and they hired me anyway....
