Is it better to have a controller for your laptop setup? I'm debating on a backup but at the same time if it's backup it would be a controller as well.
Any opinions?

i use my denon 2500 as a controller...and then it also is a back up player.
there is a huge difference in having BIG LIT up buttons vs using a mouse. i had gotten pretty good using a mouse....or hitting f1 or f6 to start a song....but the big button is much nicer.
so I say computer plus controller that can be used as a back up player as well....as well as an incredible sound card....is the way to go.

then next question will be,
hd2500, hc4500 and the stupid question of the day, by using your mouse and controller in conjunction will that affect the performance of the controller/laptop?

Controller, Right now I have the Numark Total Control, Hoping to go to the Stanton SCS 1D shortly, 2 of them though

While my software supports any MIDI controller -- IMHO, it's just one more thing that can break. The controller can break, the MIDI subsystem can go down, the cable can come loose, etc.
Ok, so you got the WOW factor with a controller, with cool lit up buttons -- but you can do the same thing by using keyboard shortcuts. You don't even need a mouse.
Here's the way I do it while testing or playing a party:
If standing, I use the keyboard or a controller.
If sitting, I use a mouse (I'm pretty fast with a mouse).
If you are comfortable with using a keyboard, you can save a lot of money, by not getting a controller. You can also get a programmable keypad like the XKeys stuff -- which work flawlessly, but don't look as cool as a controller.

doesn't affect it at all. I can still use mouse, keyboard, controller, whatever. It just gives me more control.
as to rick's post, I considered the same thing. I tried pulling the usb plug out, turning off the denon, or just turning off midi all while playing songs....no problems..no crashes...so if it happens during a show, i'll be back to using soley keyboard, which is a fine back up.
dont know much about the 4500...i thinks that's a cd player too....i remember those..they came after 8 tracks

The controller is a nice add on. You'll get better control, and less mouse hiccups. I used the DAC-3 for a couple of years, then moved on to the HDN 2500 Denon, without laptop. I'll never go back to laptop for music again. I might consider laptop operation for video though.
