A guest comes up to you and says, "I really hate this song, can you cut it?"

Sorry, but no.... in fact, because I get catankerous, I would probably play every last note of it, especially if ANY people are dancing.

Wait a minute or two...

Ya know, Cap's got good answers.

Once I thought a song was going over well enough and someone (not paying the bill) is more demanding (you know there's a reason they call them requests) than asking me to cut it. I told him don't worry about it. The music is like Chicago weather. Wait a minute or two, it'll change

I got asked sortof the same question by a client today, "what would you do if someone asked for a song on our Do Not Play list?"

I told her if some one came and asked for the Chicken Dance and it was on your Do Not Play list (in fact it is) I would say "Chicken Dance? No sorry I don't have that one."

She just smiled at me and said, "Good answer..." and we laughed about it.

Now I'm doing her wedding reception!

Of course, though, the person would know you are lying.... I bet even Matt has the Chicken Dance in his collection.

I'm sure they would after all I don't have much of a poker face to begin with....

In all honesty I would probably just tell them I can't per my contract, period.

She told me I could just send them over to her and she'd give them "the look" and they'd stop... but I can't see myself pushing off a pushy guest on my guest of honor could you?

Not intentionally, but I definitely would, and have many times, said "I'm sorry, but that is on our "Do Not Play List" for the evening..... and leave it at that. If they choose to then go bother the bride, well that is on them.

Amateurs! The response goes like this…
"The chicken dance? Let me ask you something buddy, how do you know the bride and groom? Ah, you are a friend of the bride…figured as much. See the groom had an uncle who had a heart attack dancing the chicken dance a few years ago at his 12th birthday party. He been traumatized by it ever since and simply can not hear the chicken dance without bursting into tears. So you’ll understand if I don’t play it on what is supposed to be the happiest day of his life. How about something else? What would you like to dance to? Oh you like heavy metal, wow…um, yea…I guess you also don’t know about the groom’s brother who electrocuted himself while playing a Judas Priest guitar riff and drinking beer at the same time. Yea, no I don’t really know how he pulled it off…perhaps with a straw? Hey, how about we get you a shot and you go quietly back to your corner."

LOL.... I once actually left my CD at home for the Cha Cha slide - before I used a laptop at all. I was cleaning it and forgot to put it back in my collection.... but what I actually told a guest was, my daughter borrowed it and said she put it back, but I'll be darned if I can find it! :sqerr:

Sure, blame it on the defenseless children...:sqlaugh::sqwink:

LOL....Coreen will sometimes pull the old "Gee, that CD has a scratch on it and that song just won't play."........

well i have the best one now days - its a djdrop that tells them NOT to come up and ask to play something to dance to, or they will be subject to songs like this .................. (insert song here) multi song drop added...

works very well too

just to add - if anyone wants to hear the drop just ask!

I know someday Im going to snap when some bonehead comes up and says hey can you cut this song no one likes it....at which point the dance floor is full with people dancing and smiling....Im simple going to hit pause and say...."Would you people get the hell off the dance floor...this guy says no one can dance to this it sucks......thank you hit play

I hear ya there, Don. Some people are just plain stupid and need a sign around their necks that says so.

I was DJing a bar gig in town several yeas ago. The place was packed, it was a small bar. I put on a popular Country buckle polisher tune just to see if anyone would dance to it. A couple of couples did.

Not a minute into the song, some knucklehead comes over and tells me to change it, saying "Nobody dances to this stuff!"

I smiled, pointed to the folks who were slow dancing and said "They do." :)

He gave me a dirty look and went away. :D

God bless you, Fred!
Only had the chance to do that ONCE in 25 years.
poor guy was so drunk, he didn't get it...
and stodd there looking at me.

the only thing worse than someone who wants you to cut a song...
is someone who has no song to request that is "better"
(or if they "do" request a song...it's one you played 10 minutes ago)

Or the song you played that was a request and the person comes back up and asks why havent you played my song yet....I did 2 songs ago...Oh I must have been out of the room can you play it again:sqconfused:....:sqconfused:

absolutely!
that "pushy" guest was someone invited by the b/g...
it's not ME being pushy with the client.
ever done a gig where you get a BUNCH of requests for the same song, and you know it'll be a killer if you play it, and you really want to play it...
but it's on the list?
I don't "blame" it on the bride, I just tell the guest that the bride asked me not to play it...and it's her day...and I want to respect her wishes.
If THEY have the nerve to bug the bride about it...
that's their choice.
in cases where the guest DID ask the bride for permission to play it
I have never had a bride regret changing her mind.
