It was very cold this morning, all day in fact. The kind of cold that just bites your @$$. I spent the day willing, honoring a fallen brother. Standing out in the bitter cold in my kilt, jewels were ice. And I would have stood there all day if need be. Lets just say It was a fitting honor to a brave soul.

Here's some pictures take by the son of one of my dept. brothers.

Sorry about your brother fireman. It was very cold, but we must do what needs to be done. Myself, I try to stay out of the cold. And when the wind blows, OUCH!

Well, I didn't handle it nearly as gracefully as you. Spent 1 1/2 hours outside this morning cleaning out my driveway so I could get to town. Got home this evening and spent almost another hour cleaning it out again at -15 (it's now -20 and still dropping). Hopefully the wind doesn't pick up much snow overnight as I've cleaned out my 1/4 mi driveway 5 times since monday. I'm ready to move south.

I spent 3.5 hours in the E.R. early this morning....

Had to bring my girlfriend there to get checked out. They said she has Pnumonia..:sqfrown:

I spent the day outside also,,, man, was it ever..... ok,, I loaded my van for my week-end events, hung the wash up between the coconut trees and that was about it....

Me and my ugly swing did play golf yesterday.....i shot an 89

Spent the day working on the two weekend shows inside...when I did go out the battery in my van was dead...left nothing on...guess its time to replace it...also yesterday blew a fuse on the blower for heat....tomorrow suppose to be bitter and my arse will be in it getting my van running.....:sqmad:

Thanks to everyone for your kind words. I didn't know this poor soul but in the brother hood we are there for each other. We grieve together. It's his family I feel sorry for and the men in his Co. he left behind. But there were firefighters from all over the country there today.

Chuck,
In case I haven't told you lately,

YOU SUCK!!!:sqwink:

Valerie,
We do for each other knowing that we are all there for each other. Believe me, it wasn't graceful at all. I had a hard time holding my sticks and playing in rhythm. But is was worth it.

PP,
I'm glad everything is OK. When the ER is busy and you want to get treated quicker do this: Wear a windbreaker with these three big letters on the back, ICE. You'll clear out the ER very quickly.

Trafficgoo,
Thanks. Oh and by the way you don't suck as much as Chuck does. You didn't show pictures.:sqwink:

Side note:
If anyone is heading to Vegas and makes it down to NY NY check out the display of fire shirts out front. There you will find two shirts from my band "Worcester Fire Brigade". I don't know how they got there but I saw them last year. It was cool, I stood in front of them but nobody wanted my autograph.:sqlaugh:

I do believe the only thing worse than playing in the cold in a kilt is fighting a fire in the cold....I once asked some firefighters and paramedics how they handled the bitter cold during an accident when they had to extricate someone.....answer...you block it out of your mind and concentrate on the person...time to worry about the cold later...my hat goes off to all the men and women that are in this line of work.....your the absoulute best bar none....

My prayers to the family of your fallen comrade

Dogman,
One of the worst fires I fought was when the temperature was in the single digits. At first arrival I actually had a sunburn on my face from the radiant heat besides sweatin my uknowwhats off. A few hours later I was covered in ice from head to toe. 8 hours later I was physically sick from the changes in temperature. But you're correct. We don't think about it, we just do it. Like the time I jumped into a quarry in the middle of November after someone drove their car into it. Boy I should have thought twice before I did that one.

Let's see.... I've had the house heater off and the pellet stove off for the last 3 days straight. It's currently 67 in the house and probably mid 50's outside. (9pm) - Truly sorry for those in the sub zero temps and I hope everyone's families and loved ones are all well and as warm as possible!

Ron,

Last week, a local firefighter died. It was written up in the papers. Every firefighter and paramedic in Delaware who wasn't officially on duty attended the ceremony in her honor. It was impressive to say the least. It was cold and windy as a sumbeech out there too.

As you mention, this is a brotherhood of dedicated people who all work together as a team. In a small state like DE, most of 'em know each other. :)

I planted my but in a chair and watched movies all day. Ordered pizza and made them deliver it :)

Fred,
Can you point out any articles about this firefighter? I'd be honored to read more about her. I don't mean this in a bad way but sometimes part time and volunteer firefighters don't get the same recognition we union full timer guys get. I could explain why but it doesn't really matter. Besides I don't want to get Tom all riled up.

Nevermind Fred I found some.

Edit (didn't read the first post):

I'm sorry for your fallen Conrad, Ron. It never ceases to amaze me how big firefighter and police funerals are the brotherhood is amazing.
