Time For A New Laptop

Ok, so I've done some research prior to now, but tonight, i was shown that I needed a new laptop when the screen on my primary laptop just went. I could get it fixed...but at the rate that thing performs its not worth it.

So i'm looking for sugguestions on a laptop that can meet these criteria:

~ Run VDJ with ease
~ Multitask with multiple multimedia programs
~ Run vista with good results
~ Be durable enough for road use as well as personal
~ Handle a large quantity of media/material
~ Be under $1200

I don't want a Mac product, so please don't sugguest them. Theyre out of my budget and not the format i want. This laptop must be used for college for me as well and the college mandates that any laptops used on campus have the college software be installed so you can access networks etc. and its windows based. I really want something powerful that will perform well.
 
What are you doing with the old one when you get the new one?
 
I think you're going to have difficulty finding any pc that multi-tasks with ease.....I would be concerned using that laptop at a show for audio playback, plus other duties. I think you lappy at a show should be devoted to one thing, as our cd players, etc.

Just like I think the show laptop should be just that...not one you surf the web with, download movies, etc....

All of this other activity tends to slow down and bloat the machine, especially after and security software, etc.

Buy 2 600 dollar laptops; one for work; one for play.....you've then got some back up as well...

Ryan your vision is VERY skewed if you think your laptop for college can't be a mac in fact unless you're going to college on the Moon its actually preferred...

just pickin but true, now i say this only having lived in South Carolina when i was PD at Mix 97.7 and 103X .. going to college in SC may be similar to the moon but i assure you that Macs and Colleges are tight...


Having said that, Steves suggestion for a play computer and a work computer are VERY important. Your work computer should have no wireless etc

I got my first laptop in college and used it for personal use, business & DJing. Never had a problem. That was about 8 or 9 years ago and I've had 3 more laptops since then and have always used the laptop for a variety of things. I go online with it all the time and have both personal & business software on it. In all those years and hundreds of events, never had a lock-up, crash or virus.

When DJing, I regularly have several programs open--PCDJ, Excel, Firefox and sometimes one or two other programs...again, no lock-ups or freezes ever. With that said, that doesn't mean it won't happen to someone else. I personally think a lot (if not most) computer problems are caused by the user.

Something I will agree with that can't be said enough is back-up. I currently have 3-4 copies of all my music and other important data. That's way overkill but I am a bit OCD about making sure I have a back-up of the back-up in case there are any issues.

As far as what brand, a lot of it is personal preference. My first laptop was an HP. Since then all I've owned are IBM (now Lenovo) Thinkpads. I personally feel like they're the Rane of laptops. They are solid machines and unless they drastically change the design I'll never buy a different laptop. I'm on my 3rd one and each one I like better than the one before it.
 
I created my Dell labtop for DJing purposes and it works great at the parties I do.

Eventually I plan on ordering an eBay screen, wiping it of everything, putting on XP Pro and running nothing but VDJ OR Lights on it, right now i need a functional laptop that can multitask. I know it can be done, because i've seen it.
