I saw a Youtube review of this DMX controller. I'm thinking about getting a BUNCH of lighting gear in anticipation of really expanding things. I don't want to start full scale marketing until I have some good lighting gear in place and know how to use it. I want to keep things as simple as possible. I'm never going to have super complicated light shows.
Anyone using this DMX controller?

We used this very controller at Mobile Beat for the DMX After Dark Class. Tyrone has a book dedicated basically to the programming of this, and I think most felt (after the class and the book) that it was pretty straight forward to use. I don't think for the $ it can be beat.

I own the DMX40 and have used it for a few years with no problems. I don't know what the difference between the 40 and 40B is.
It is very straight forward and even a dummy like me can use it. I control 3-Intimidators, 1-Insignia and 6-ColorsplashJrs.
I will be adding 2-MinSpots, 2 more ColorsplashJrs and a Starball LED, right Ben?

I use a LSC DMX Operator Pro. Great board and it can do Par Cans DMX via DMX Dimmer Packs like the 4B by AMDJ. Board will run you around $350.00. 8 fixtures at 16 channels each....

He actually does... since we basically are at the bottom of his food chain. We had a long chat about just this in Las Vegas, 2 nights before the convention began.
I use that DMX controller... it's ok... I think when I get more DMX lights I'll be switching to PC controlled.
The slider accuracy is ok... and easy of use is great, but it's an economy controller.... I don't like the sound active mode it is to sensitive. And there doesn't appear to be a way to adjust the sensitivity.

One way to control the sensitivity is to run the audio lead through a level controller. My Mixer has a second audio output for a "Booth" Sound System. I run that lead into the DMX controller. The "Booth" lead has a potentiometer for level control. It works out just great limiting the audio input to the DMX controller.
If your Mixer doesn't have this capability, you can put a small monitor amp on board and control it that way. In any case, you will definitely be happier being able to control the audio input to the DMX controller for the sound active mode.

Can you control non DMX lights with the controller I asked about? Like simple par cans or basic non DMX effects lights?
I was at a bar a couple of weeks ago and the guy doing the sound board also was operating what looked like a simple lighting board with "faders" and knobs etc. He pushed the different faders up and down doing a kind of weird manual flashing light show alternating different lights and the fog machine. The board looked vaguely similar to a mixer. I thought the light show looked kind of spastic, but I imagine with some practice you could maybe do some decent effects? Just wondering...
