I don't know much about you Adam, but what I know has me both confused and concerned.
You live/work in a thinly populated area of MN. The combined population of your own and three surrounding cities is barely 1000 people. You have many other DJs (which you have spoke to) in this area that are sharing this small group of potentials. Seems risky already. Then, you obtain a full music library, Bose L1s, Game Show Mania and a full karaoke system. Hell, most single ops in the big cities don't have that arsenal.
Now, you want a teen system for another 6K?
Dude, I just don't see how all this is going to pay off. Again, I only know what I can piece together from the pronounced information. I don't think that Steve is submitting paragraphs of logic and advise just to toot his own horn.
I wish you all the best in your endeavors, but if you're not hearing what you want or feel unsupported by your peers here, then perhaps it's time to keep things to yourself and go prove us wrong?

I would do a little research and see what the absolute most money a school in your area has paid for a prom DJ....then decide if busting your butt all year for $500 a pop is worth trying to secure their prom. School dances require a ton of gear to do them right but pay very poorly, so the only way spending 6K specifically to market towards HS events is worth it is if there is a payday come April and May.
To address the original question...
Unless and until you have a large number of school dance bookings that will carry over every year for years to come, I respectfully suggest that you not vest that much dough in a school dance rig.
Getting started, all you'd need for sound would be a pair of dually 15" 2-way cabs and a dually 18" with plenty of headroom in your amps. You can tri-amp the rig for a good tone with lots of thump.
It won't cost anywhere near $6 grand.

If he adds a few GOOD subs, And GOOD amps to what he already has..He will be fine.
I gave him some suggestions in a PM this morning..and he said that was what he was looking for.
If he comes home with Pyle Pro's or Gem Sound's than he really didn't listen to me this time.
I suggested: EV QRX double 18's, JBL SRX 728's, Or Peavey QW218's (To help his standings with steve a bit)
All of which are great multiple use boxes, that could be cross rented, And are of the quality that could take years of use and keep coming back for more!
Plus, If he doesn't have the work for them, I'd buy them!

Take a look at the EV's Kevin Nichols bought and look at the 18's just as Fred mentioned. You'll need amps, processing, cables and that's it. If those add up to too much money. Look at the Carvin stuff. But the most important thing is you need to sit down and let the "compass" stop spinning.
May I also recommend with said money get rid of iTunes and get some decent software, while iTunes may work you're only making people think anybody can be a successful DJ and as an end result you'll get even less clients because the competition is still going to grow.

PM Chuck (Maui Chuck) and ask him about the school dance market. Before moving to Maui, Chuck was the school dance guru in his market. His company had several schools that they worked for every year.

I started my way in building it and realized that it was a complete waste. School dances in my area generally price out at $350 to $600. At that price point they get 2 15" Mains and 2 18" subs. and a 10 foot Lighting truss.
I had planned to provide 2 dual 18"s 2 dual 15"s side fill if needed. and 20 ft of lighting a 2 video screens. Nope not for less than $1000.

It used to tickle me at shows when the younger guys would come over to chat and brag about their souped-up car stereos. I'd just stand there and smile and listen. 1000 watts driving a bandpass box, bla bla bla.
Then the inevitable question would arise: How much power you got? I'd beckon 'em around behind the rack stack to take a look... then watch the expressions on their faces.
