Voila - Web-centric.
As far as you're concerned - If it's not on the internet it doesn't exist.

Were you a DJ before Al Gore :) invented the internet? If so, where did you find clients? If not, how do you suppose the rest of us got here?

My first guess..... the Phone Book....:sqeek:

Stone tablets maybe....?

Mores Code....

Smoke signals...

Native Drums....

O gosh I don't know maybe they did just as I do today.... goto bridal shops, tux shops, florists, bakers, hotels, baquet halls,.... pass out cards... tell friends... sleep with the baque... oops maybe not that one.... computer's and the internet have not made those things obsolete but it has made them less important to finding clients and getting your name out in front of them.

That is my whole point. The marketing I was doing and the way customers looked for wedding DJs before AL Gore laid his genius down on us was tremendously different that the way I do it now? Why? Technology has changed tremendously. People research and make decisions differently than they did 17 years ago.

Using the argument, "It worked for me in '92, so that's why I do it that way today just doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Yes, some clients can still find you the old way, but I am going to make a bold prediction and say this internet thing is starting to catch on.:sqwink:

All the tea leaves say customers will use the internet more and more, but hey, if you didn't need it to be successful in the 80's, why the heck would you need it now?:sqwink:

The internet makes it easier for people to find information - but you are over-reaching when you claim that it has changed the manner in which they make decisions.

The decision making process remains unchanged. Relationships always come first, trust always wins, and physical presence makes the difference.

Mot of the best customers out there NEVER make it to your web page because the savvy DJs connect with them first - the old fashioned way.

The internet is exactly like the phone book in the sense that it's what people use when they have no other credible place to go. (Consequently, it is why the internet if full of weak leads and last minute desperados.)

My best clients don't come from the internet, and while they may be big users of the web - it didn't factor in to their decision making. What counts most in personal netwroking, referrals, and reputation.

A web page also doesn't qualify as "advertsiing" because advertsing is something you place directly in front of a qualified potential buyers. A web page isn't placed in front of anybody - it requires a query or some kind of search. Web visitors are like "foot-traffic" where your rank is your "location". Trouble is, foot-traffic is always comprised of a lot of window shoppers.

Web-centric is the condition of relying almost entirley on the internet to support your business and neglecting the subtle difference between the using the internet as opposed to relying on it.

I never said the internet is the ONLY way customers find DJs. Of course, referrals are the best way. However, we have a number of people that get referred to us that STILL go to the website and tell us that they were referred. I do believe people do cut down choices by what they've seen on web pages..which is why I say people make choices differently than they did years ago. Just like a brochure years ago, a web page projects an image.

Yes, we get clients that call us that have never seen the website. They were referred and just called. That's great. But why stop there?

Around here, I have found that a large number of engaged couples browse the internet looking for a DJ. Maybe it only happens in Cleveland.

WEB DENIAL
is the condition of believing the internet is not an important tool to conduct business in today's world.

Remember, when the telephone came out, there were some stubborn business men who said you cannot use a phone to conduct business. Business needs to be conducted face to face. That's the way it's been done for 100's of years.

Well, they found out that SOME business needs to be done face to face. A lot of business can be easily done over the phone.

Same thing with the internet today. SOME business should be done face to face. SOME things can be done by phone but SOME things can be done over the internet. A good business man should understand what the internet can and can't be used for the client's benefit.

My 2 cents, YMMV.

I search out new clients in a multitude of ways, but the internet, my website, and my online planner are a great tool for me. Most of my clients say that they love the online planner and use it well. It does not take away from my face to face meetings and never will, it only makes them easier and faster for both me and my clients. For those clients that don't use the it then my wife or I type the info in ourselves.

Having the event info online is great for me because I can access it anytime, anywhere. It also has stopped the "lost or misplaced" paperwork or the spilled coffee problems, and we have all had those.

like I said YMMV

ok one last thing about this subject

over the last week or so I have had 27x power outages
one client wanted to do the online thing but called up and said it was impossible to do anything because of the power outages she was having

if I had a stable way of being online 24/8 then yes I would use one

but when it comes down to it having one located in another country when we get cut off from time to time - the lines are down satellite is offline
you would be shocked on how hard it is here when things just stuff up

there isnt a very high speed dsl network
one major phone company owns all the lines and the other players that lease lines
they have to deal with the main phone company if anything goes wrong (crap idea)

but having the ability on a one on one face with clients you can also see how far better it is of when u deal with them at a wedding

I am also old school too so untill i am fully retired I;ll stay internet less on the online booking forms

i can email these and they can send them back but just right now its still not 100% on my list (may at 15% thats all that I would do) and the aussie $ always up and down its just not worth it unless it was hosted here and the rates where a lot less

oh well back to the books and repairs...

oh I added the speeds that I get and I am on a high plan here :(

Totally agee. If I was dealing with 4 power outages a day, I wouldn't be counting on the power or my internet connection either.

Oh Scott we are in an area with Underground power but for the power to get to us here
it has to be done via wires outside the estate :(

oh well one day it will get better
and as the government have promised for 5x years so far (with no conclusion)
that we will get high speed internet (when they get off thier fat azz in 200 years maybe)

so till then its fast as I know but slow compared to the rest of the world
