Who do you think was / is the greatest musician / performer ever?

Back in the day Bobby Vinton gave all the live performers a run for their money.
I don't think there is an instrument he can't play.
He still does a fantastic show today. Can't say that about many who were named in this thread.

He's only been mentioned once so far...but M. Jackson has to be near the top doesn't he? Yeah, he's a certified freak show now but how many records did he break with his...er...records? I never saw him in concert but from my 47 yr old memory, there was no other artist that people were so completely wacked out about since the Beatles. I remember seeing news footage of people in line at concerts, crying, etc...I don't remember that happening since with any artist.
 
Quincy Jones should get more credit than he does for MJ's peak albums (Off The Wall, Thriller, & Bad).

My pick is Ira Gershwin -or- Cole Porter.

their tunes launched all of Pop Music --- there would be no Sinatra without either of them!
 
Tough call....to me, I break them up into two groups...a great musician may not be a great performer, and vice versa.

An example I can site is the difference between Garth Brooks and Ricky Skaggs....Garth Brooks is one heckuva performer and showman...a "marketing genius"....but I'm not sure he can even spell instrument.

Ricky Skaggs is an incredible musician, but isnt into the "flash". Knows music theory and application "inside out and upside down" (so to speak) and is a superb picker.

Yo-Yo Ma is the best musician I have ever heard. Mike Oldfield's music is among the most complex and intricate I have heard.

Living where I do, I am fortunate to be able to attend the Van Cliburn competition a few times over the last 15 years. Everyone in that competition is a better musician than any "arena rock" band that has been mentioned so far. By miles.
