So ive been planning on buying a set of 12 inch tops to use for Ceremony speakers (usually just use one of my 15 tops and return it to its stick after ceremony)....and also as an emergency back up if my 15's were to blow.

i own a set of EV zlx 15s and so the obvious choice is the zlx 12's.... however i heard some positive talk about the Mackie Thump 12's

any thoughts?

Wasn't impressed .. heard them at the DJExpo .. I might look at the new Yamaha DXR12 mk2.

Are you only going to use them for ceremonies????

If so, why not just buy a Bose S1 Pro? Great sound in a compact ceremony speaker, and it covers 150 guests no problem for a ceremony. Battery powered, light weight speaker is the best way to go for 95% of the ceremonies we do. I have not used a pair of 12s or 15s for a ceremony in YEARS (except when using my reception set up for the ceremony)

If you want to use a 12, just get the Alto TS312. Better quality sound than a EV ZLX and a Mackie Thump. I am sure some will disagree with me, but they are brand snobs, and may need to get their ears cleaned out! :)

I thought about going the compact array route...but id like whatever i buy to be a safety net if my main speakers ever go during a gig.

Also may use them as "fill" once and a while in a large venue situation.

Im not really a speaker brand snob...obviously... just would like some solid speakers that wont break the bank.

A friend of mine bought a pair of Mackie Thumps. They sounded like mush and within a year they both had burned out. I'd say no.

^^^^ I agree with this. I listened to the 12” Mackie Thumps before I bought my UNMENTIONABLE speakers, but there was absolutely NO comparison. The Mackie Thumps sounded muddy. They also looked cheap. The speakers I bought sounded very crisp and clear, and were also cheap, but they didn’t look it.[emoji4]

To be "fair" .. this is gen 2 of the Thumps .. probably sufficient for ceremony use .. along with the unmentionable brand ...

One thing I'll mention, in all fairness to Mackie, my friend seemed to have problems understanding that you don't set powered speakers to "mic level" position. He borrowed my QSCs one time and did the same thing. If he ran those Mackies at mic level (my assumption here) but then I'm pretty sure they wouldn't last for long. Still, they sound like crap.

Yeah... But I listened to them side-by-side in the store from the exact same source. The salesman had everything set up at the optimal settings on every speaker, so if there was any difference, you’d be able to hear it... and I did. I’d NEVER buy the Mackies when the unmentionables are so much better.

Trusting what you know, is wise, specifically when you know Electro Voice.

lol...my love and trust for EV all stems from an EV hand mic i bought in 92....i used that thing as my personal mic for thousands of club nights and mobile gigs til retiring in 2007 ...completely wore the handle off and had it held together with electrical tape... but it still sounded perfect. still got it but decided not to use it in my post retirement career...lol

I've had plenty of EV troubles. Dude, look at the Altos. They're cheap, they sound good and if you treat them decently, they seem to have a long life span.
