Ok here's the detail:
For their special dance they'd like to have this:
The two songs are At Last by Nora Jones it is 2 minutes and 57 seconds long. The other song is Lets get Married (Remix) by Jagged Edge, and it is 4 minues and 8 seconds long.
I have listened to both songs several times and taken notes of parts i like as the song time counts down and that is how i will explain the parts we would like played.
-Start 'At Last' from the beginning and @ 2 minutes and 4 seconds left start to skip the song.
-Then add a little fuzz or static, which will lead into the 'suprise' part.
- Start 'Lets get Married' (Remix) @ 3 minutes and 51 seconds of the song remaining (so it wont start at the very beginning but it will have the same beat as at the begininng).
-Then that will stop a@ 2 minutes and 39 seconds remaining and cut to another part of the song that starts @ 2 minutes and 4 second and then end the entire song song at 56 seconds left.
This is what i am imagining....after listenign to it let me know if you have any input or ideas! If this is confusing I can meet with you and we can go over it in person. i'm not in any hurry to get this so no rush.

Considering that it doesn't seem all that complex what she is asking for... I told her the first mix is free.... and we'll go from there.
Why does he have to? Im unsure what your making of Robs question but. He asked a pretty straight forward simple one which didnt include file sharing nor illegal transfer. Getting it recorded allows the couple to rehearse and also cuts down on a possible alteration of said mix live at the gig.
Needless to say I spent about 2 hours working on it.... mostly because I was navigating new software to do it... Mixmeister Express... and looking for the right Sound FX off amazon.com..

OK this is going to be my last comment on this because I really don't want a bantering back and forth. Do most of us do what Rob is asking? Maybe so. He mentioned the word "Charge for service". Bottom line is that the client would end up with a CD in their hands = product, not a service. To take someone else's music and copy it, without their permission, in whole or part IS AN INFRINGEMENT. Who is to prevent that bride from making additional copies and giving to her friends or family? Guess who will be the source? I don't disagree with Rob making the mix at all (For the intended purpose), but the charge for the service or product is another matter.
I have made sample copies of mixes before but I made damn sure that the person/prospective client who I loaned it too could not copy it without having to edit my voice and make breaks/tracks. I also went back and retrieved the copy I loaned to that person for review.
Remember there is a current thread about a Gobo Monogram that was being used without Kevin Nichols permission and look at how everyone is up in arms about that. What is the difference?

Actually what I did was created a parody of the orginal music there for making it my own and thus making it even legal for me to distribute... there is a part of the copywright law that allows for parady's... by choping up and adding to the music my own stuff this is what I've done whether I borrow in part or in whole a song as long as it is a parody I'm safe.... I could go copy and paste that portion of the copywrite law but this discussion was never about law or copywrites it was about what to charge for doing something ahead of time.... isn't your time valuable?

I can't, no. Not on nothing but a dual-cd. Laptop = sure, why not.
Yup, I just include it in rate too, and Im only charging $750 for a 4hr reception.

The Bride want to do one of those " Funny and Surprising" first dances Im assuming.
Joker wants to make a mix to PLAY for her first dance.Not to sell and distribute like we ALL did at one time when we made mixed tapes ( yup, on those crazy plastic things called cassetes)
For arguments sake, he can mix and make a mash up LIVE. Is it still Illegal?
I get the whole " Illegal if you want to distribte" thing but this is not for that purpose.
The problem with including it in my rate is that she asked for it after the fact.... she had already contracted me and simply wanted to add this to her agreement as an add-on service.

Well I fired the first edit to her and she loved it.... but, she made a mistake on telling me where the first edit point should be and asked if it could be extended out 3-4 seconds before transitioning into the second song.... plus add "skipping record" effect before the scratch effect....
She was also ok with the Etta James version for this too....
Cool! I can do that and did it in under five minutes using VDJ and creating a skip effect into a backspin that allows for the sound effect to be added later of a record needle being ripped off the record....
I've sent this edit off to see if it's what she was invisioning.... in the mean time take a listen tell me what ya think:

I just throw these things in, even after the fact. Its no skin off my teeth. This is the first First Dance edit I've done though.
On an interesting note, there are very practical reasons for this kind of thing too - one time the father of the bride had a hard time standing for prolonged periods of time, but it was important to both of them to do their Father/Daughter, so I shortened the original version of "Daddy's Hands" (not Judds - can't remember who off top of my head) so he could dance with her to it.
The need for this didn't come out until our second/final planning meeting, so it too was "post-agreed-upon-price." I find it hard to believe that anyone here would have had the nerve to try to charge for that mix in those circumstances - but it's not all fun and games with these edits. SOmetimes there's a very good reason for them!

Gosh since when did DJ's even charge to mix??? That wtf a dj does!!!! Whats next? Are we going to add "crossfades" as a package add on?

What really bothers me is that a lot of dj services make claims to offer a personalized or customized wedding reception....and now when someone decides to take them up on thier offer and see how personal/custom they can make thier wedding now they start thinking of how much can I charge for this.
1 custom dance mix should be free, anything more than 1 dance should be charged extra.

Sure but they will need it to coriagraph to... And chanses are I couldn't do it the same way twice and I sure as hell ain't going to their dance rhesals just to mix that song live for them...
