Here's my take on me asking this question. For me I still love what I do after all these years most times. Not always because there are those events we do that don't turn out the best. You know those events where the crowd really isn't into dancing yet you still have to do what you're getting paid to do.

Part of what still keeps me motivated believe it or not is the gear I use to do events. I just love seeing people having a good time because of what I have done to make them have a good time. It really helps when someone comes up to either during or after an event that you did a great job!

Sometimes it gets tough to get motivated to do an event knowing you've got some serious work ahead of you. The loading up the gear to get it where you're going to do an event. Then you have to setup and do the job and after that break things down. Then load everything up and take it back to where you came from loading it up in the first place. Then when you get there you then have to unload and in our case we have to put it back down stairs in the basement where I live.

What truly helps with all of that is when you do an event where things went over the top where you're proud to know you're still a DJ.

Notice I didn't mention anything about money being a factor because if that were it considering the work it takes to do an event, the time it has taken me to get back to the level where I am and all the money I invested in equipment, nobody could truly pay me enough money for all of that. I may add more later as it comes to me.

I'll tell you the one thing I certainly hate and that is when people keep bugging you to play this or that the whole time you're performing at an event. You know they just won't leave you alone so you can do your job that you're getting paid to do. They think they know more about DJing then you do and have never once have did a damn thing that a DJ does.

Mix people have always and will always ask, bug, make request of songs THEY want to hear.it happens to every dj whether you are at a private, public, radio,tv,etc event.there are folks who attend events who do not dance, some will just rock in their seats and it doesn't mean they are not enjoying the music or the atmosphere where they are at.having people dance, getting a tip sometimes don't mean you did a good job.there are many factors to take into consideration for an event to be considered a success.some dj's will tell you that success to them means having an event go smooth and if there are any problems they are able to solve them and have things run properly for the duration of an event.practice becomes perfect and we all need to advance in whatever we do on a daily basis.even if you go to mcdonalds don't you see they change or add things to the menu to draw customers interest and $$$$$.many times you have to motivate yourself and not sit back expecting something to motivate you.

I'll have to admit I'm motivated mostly by the money that can be made. I also like to see people having a good time, dancing and celebrating.

I have been working in the music biz in one form or another since I was 17.
Although a "love of music" has always inspired me...
at this point, I really don't have have skills to do anything else.

I still love "the music" and the crowd interaction but it's also a hell of a lot more fun as of late with the transformation of the gear, having a completely digital library, full DMX lighting, and full video just kicks ass.

I was doing video long before it was even cool, I still have the VHS and Laser disc in the road case that I used then for what reason I dunno, but it was killer in a gym when those kids saw a 20' screen and full screen projection of those old Wolfram videos!

I will also admit, the coin of today, is far better..... :)

I know people will make request if the client is OK with that. I was talking about guest that won't leave you alone so you can do your job. They keep bugging you for this song and that song. Insisting you play their request next. Nothing wrong with a guest making a request. My issue has to do with the ones that keep pestering you the whole time the event is going on.

I even remember 1 drunk that came up to me many years ago and ask could he play something? I told him politely no I got it.

a drunk will do that, the person is not in the right frame of mind and some people are just "pasts",they believe that the more they bother you will give in and play the request.you are in control,so do just that "be in control".

yawn!!!!

I really enjoy Djing. I enjoy being an important part of people having a great time.

some things are inconvenient, like the hours and transporting gear.

but the money more than offsets that.

i would not give up 40 weekends a year for just a little money

I think I know the request person you are talking, its the person tries their damndest to go thru your digital library and your cueing up songs every 3=4 minutes,, after a time or two, I tell them to write it down I have to pay attention to what Im doing, and ne time dumb me was listening to the lady having a party and a song came to a dead cue, otherwords I didn't have a song ready cause the stupid lady was in my face got this got this, got this,,

I have learned that if I have a couple songs cued up to play and someone walks up to me, that I will immediately put it on "Cruise" Traktor's Version of Auto Play. That way I won't end up with the song finishing on me while i am trying to talk to whoever is grabbing my attention.
