Rig one has a Rane Empath rotary and Rig two has the Rane MP44.
I am also a big fan of the Vestax PMC series (Japan) but they are no longer in production.

If I had a gig tomorrow -- I would pick up a Denon 500 (IMHO, Ranes are way overpriced, and no better sounding).
Having said that, I have a Gemini that's older than dirt, and works fine. Doesn't look all that great, and I broke the talkover toggle -- but I never used that anyway. I've used it for hundreds of gigs, and it never failed me.
Some of the higher end mixers are quieter, but in the environment I usually worked, it was very adequate, and took a beating well

Ranes are priced higher and better sounding.
I had a Denon X800 and the 900. I really enjoyed the X800, great board that was built in Japan and it had nice output. The 900 lasted about 3 months before I sold it. The only fault I found in the 900 was it getting hot too quick.
The sound quality from Rane boards are much cleaner and stronger. The output from my system with my Rane board on 4 would be the same amount of volume I would get from the Denon set at 7 or 8 on the dial.
I would choose a Denon (Japanese made) board over a Pioneer board because the Pio's are truly overpriced and who the hell knows where they are made. Even with the Denon's you have to be careful because some of the newer stuff is being made in China now.
Yeah, Rane carries an upscale price tag. I believe it's partly due to their rep of longevity. Quality construction is important. They won't take a dump in the middle of a show.
Rick, we still have that old RS 3-mic mixer console. It still works. I can't bear to part with it for some reason. It reminds me of my early days in the biz.
My old RS setup was home built. Didn't have no rack cases. Had a pair of single tray RS CD decks with the RS console mixer between them.

Rick I still have said RS mixer and it still works great, I love the heavy feel on the faders and crossfader. You can rack mounted with a custom set of ears the only bad thing is the RCA outputs but other than that I would say it's a small tank

For the fine tuned mixes -- you would want my upgraded setup, with all the bells and whistles...

The Ranes haven't impressed me for their price John...
I'm not sure I agree that their output is stronger -- I call that being enhanced (much like I always bitch about the Gigaport sound card output).
You folks might like that stuff, given yer trying to punch through -- but I've been listening to tubes for a few years now, and the output is as flat as it's gonna get. Once you get used to that, the enhanced stuff starts to annoy you.
I'd rather push more clean power, through better sounding speakers, and keep everything else as close to flat as possible on the source side...

I don't know what Rane mixers you guys are using but the output can be adjusted (along with the EQ settings) on the back (bottom) of the mixer at least with the MP24's and 44's)

My American Audio mixer was great for over 3 years, but my last bridal show had some bad electric and I think fried the thing, so I bought a couple used mixers off a couple DC Chapter ADJA buddies. I now have a Pioneer DJM 3000 as my main mixer and a Rane MP24z as a back up.
However, I do have to get the Rane repaired. I was told channel 3 had a problem, but I haven't checked it out yet.
