Weddings What is your style??

I am a DJ what would you like? Need I say Chameleon, Versatile? I fit most needs. Brand me if you will Rick. I dont premix my show though as I read the crowd and go with that vibe.
Ive never had anyone ask me that but i do ask them what type and style of music they like which in turn helps me to do the show
I can't brand you -- you have no unique style as you say above...

I think when many people ask that question about your style, they are referring to your specialty area. Think of it like a doctor: All doctors are doctors, but some specialize as podiatrists, heart surgeons, brain surgeons, etc. Then there's Jacob... :sqerr:
In our field of endeavor, how would you classify your specialty? Are you a high-energy, interactive entertainer that brings something special to the event? Are you a laid back DJ, that will not play anything from a do not play list?
Some people look for that aspect of your personality -- some want a wedding cover band/DJ that does what they're told -- some want Frank Sinatra to do his thing, and entertain the crowd using their specialty.
I have only been asked twice
both times I answered with another question.
"what exactly do you mean?"
in both cases, they admitted that read a "questions to ask your DJ" website
and didn't really "need" to know the answer.

DJs are all of the above. If the client wants a high energy showman, they get it. If the want a moderately interactive manager that will guid their event without being too intrusive then they will get it. If they want the DJ to just shut up and DJ then they'll get that too.

I've just found that some people are looking for that sort of thing -- they don't want a patent used car salesman/jack of all trades answer -- they are looking for a distinctive talent, and/or distinctive personality.
Take Wiz for example -- he sings. He doesn't do karaoke, he sings. He seems to be getting good gigs because of that specialization. He can still DJ, but apparently people look for him because of his specialty.
Without a brand/style/specialty, you fit into the general contractor mode alone. Some people want more than that...

I too have been asked this.....I answer, "Fun, but Professional".
Many brides these days are leery of the Obnoxious, birthday clown/cheeseball type of Wedding DJ.
If they do want that, I'll recommend a different DJ to them.

I like long walks on the beach, sushi, and good wine. I'm romantic but strong. Educated, but not stuffy. I love kids and dogs, BBQ and imported cheese.

A Mobile DJ is supposed to be a chameleon!
We can be quiet and obscure during the 4pm ceremony
We can be classy and elegant during the 5pm dinner music
We can be a stand-up comic during the fun, interactive events
We can be the nightclub DJ when the party starts moving
and we can be the clients best friend as we say Goodnight at 11pm!
I think that telling a client you are versatile, is the most honest answer we can give them.
Because STYLE is something that is better when determined by someone OTHER than ourselves...
so when a potential client asks, "What is your style?..."
the perfect answer would be... "WHAT DID YOU HAVE IN MIND?"..

I probably would have agreed with you 25 years ago Mike (when I needed the work) -- I don't anymore.
I enjoy the entertainment side of it too much now. I think it's more fun to create a brand, and a distinctive style that is all your own. I think once you've put in your time, you're entitled to do that if it worked well for you.
That may not work for everyone -- that's cool too...
Whatever the client wants most of the time High Energy, Interactive, like the music I am playing....
