What is / was the worst piece of gear you ever actually owned?

I gotta ask. What was the first Radio Shack mixer like?

I had a coupleof RS mixers that served me very well. Some of thier models were built by Peavey

BBE Sonic Maximizer... 'nuff said

LOL I forgot I had one of those POS at one point.... ditched it after the first gig with it as it sounded like crap...

What was the problem with the BBE unit? I used them a few times with no issue. After using themI don't feel they are necessary but they seemed to do what they are supposed to do

I have one... never hooked it up, but when set up correctly I think they work just fine.

For starters all it did was muddy up the sound.... I ended up disconnecting it before the show even started and sold it the next day....

Do they muudy up the sound or do they clarify the sound?

If used properly they will enhance your sound, if you use it improperly it can destry your sound, the difference is knowing how to use it!

Just like any other piece of outboard gear like compressors, gates, expanders, EQs, Delays or Effects engines, if you don't use them properly or don't know how to set them up you can make a great system sound like crap! On the other hand if you do know how to use them you can make a mediocre system sound great!

The first one was great and I still have it, faders do not bleed and the crossfader has been perfect.

This is a pic of the second one which I bought in the very early 90's a piece of crap

RadioShackMixer.jpg

Both pics are form the net.

The little console RS mixer Doc Jacob shows wasn't too bad for no more than it cost. They could be got for $99.00 on sale. We still have ours and it still works. It outlasted the Gemini mixer that cost a lot more, lol.

The second board pictured, the rackmount model was RS branded, made by Pyramid if memory serves. I'm thinking John Daniels (Musicdoc) had one of those boards in the old days. It was hit and miss with these boards. Some of them didn't last very long. I seen a lot of 'em in pawn shops in the '90s.

DJ SVO

I owned the first RS mixer you show, reliable and solid is probably the best description for it. Gave it to a videographer I knew. I looked at the second RS you show but passed on it. I wanted better signal to noise. Bought a Gem, then a Linear Tech, a DOD RM 22 (no xfader), finally a Pioneer 500. The Gem is laying around in my brothers warehouse somewhere, my nephews got the DOD and I sold the Linear Tech and Pioneer to a DJ in Taunton, Ma.

The Linear Tech was a decision I regretted, I could have bought a used Biamp at the time but felt the Linear Tech had more of the features I was looking for, live and learn.

Stupid Stinking Machine 1200 :D:D:D:D:D

Worst....The old Bose 802 speakers. Absolute crap, very bland sounding, crank it up, they became distorted.

Best...Denon HD 2500, It's the greatest device for mobile DJing.

bought a Wharfedale powered sub...
after 4 uses, the speaker sounded blown.
had the store send it back for repairs
(which still would have cost me $45 for shipping)
Wharfedale was recently bought out
and the new company had NO idea what they were doing.
they had the sub for 6-months and still couldn't find the right parts to fix it
(couldnt find parts for their OWN gear?)
so they sent me a brand new, and newer model sub
(not what I wanted, but I was glad to have SOMETHING)
and that one puckered out with power problems after TWO uses.
the store felt my pain and gave me credit
which I used to buy LIGHTS instead!

not only bad products...but a bad COMPANY to back it up!

I still have one of those little radio shack mixers, always worked perfect.

However, no use for phono inputs now, so I opened it up and bypassed the pre-amps, now it can have 2 cd players and 2 cassette (or an MP3, or whatever) now.

However, I haven't turned it on in years, but it was a great little mixer, and I still loan it out once in a while to various people.

I also had the Rat Shack mixer...
got it from a friend who needed more inputs.
(didnt have the skills to open it up and mess with it)

I ended up giving it to my son...
since I didnt have the need for so many mic inputs
and so few line inputs.

Amazing how RS equipment has lost it's reputation over the years!

As I recall the $99.00 RS console mixer was originally marketed to churches and other uses where more mics than line inputs were typically used. Saw many vocal groups using these things. It was a tough little board and sported 3 mic ins, quite nice at the time. Mics could be panned, too.

There was a monaural version made earlier. My only issue with this board, it was all unbalanced, mic ins included. I used to get mic line noise with unbalanced mics.

I guess I have to put it into three seperate catagories.

Cheap:

Gemini dual CD player - Absolute junk

Expensive:

Denon DN9000 - continuous problems out of the box, the replacement I was sent was just as bad!

Real damn expensive:

Bose L1 - absolute waste of money for the way I work and what I expect from a speaker, but a pair would have been great for a TV room speaker system (I just don't watch that much TV) But I have to give Bose credit for their money back policy!

I would argue that is was not a waste of money since you got your money back. I don't know how big your TV room is, but 1 tower would be way overkill for most tv rooms.

I took the question to mean equipment you actually spent money on, not something you tried and then returned before a payment was even due.
L1's are not for everyone. Obviously they are not for you and what you expect from a speaker. Maybe from a technical stand point, you "owned" it. But I think it's more accurate to say the L1 is something you tried and returned, not owned and didn't like.

Well I thought I wouldn't be able to answer this... but I have finally come up with my "worst purchase" ever....

An "All-Power" Brand 2000 Watt generator that was being closed out from Pep Boys.

A "Honda Clone" as some would say.... but WHAT THE H*LL was I thinking?

This unit was a PIECE OF CRAP! I got one use out of it before I had to take it in for service - It was 2 months before I could get the manufacturer to allow me to pick up the POS & return it for my money back.

The best feeling was the next day when I bought my Honda EU 2000....

YEAH, I should've listened to Cap & bought the EU from the get go....:)

But life is a learning process, right?

Also, I'll second the HD2500 & then my Bose as 2 of my FAVORITE purchases...but, that'd be for another thread.

Cheers,

Joe

Agreed it wasn't a waste of money as far as the purchase goes, but it was a waste of my time (which of course is money!) :sqwink:

I don't know I thought about putting the two ZX1's in the TV room with the 12" sub but put them in the studio instead! The studio was the only place I had a small enough amp to run them and didn't want to pull it out of the studio (it is the only reference amp I own)

Campbell Hausfeld generator.

Did about 3 events with it.

On the 4 it would fire, but no juice. Dead head. No parts ANYWHERE to fix it. Campbell stopped honoring repair/warantees in December of the same year of purchase.

Sold the motor and got back half what I paid. Then I bought a Honda generator, with a Honda engine.

Love it.
