What is a "real D.J."

What "worth" stuff?

The measure of a real DJ is in his capabilities and relevent DJ skills.

The more distinctive and broader that skill set - the greater you're earning potential. That's just basic economics which applies to virtually any skill set.

Someone previously offered their definition of a real DJ as: "someone who can chooses appropriate songs and plays them in sequential order for other people's enjoyment."

How well would that description fly in a job interview? For example, is that the kind of DJ that any major hotel or resort would want on it's wedding & event team? Is that someone you would hire?

If I heard that description in an interview nothing else the candidate said is likely to be heard. I'd already be scanning the next resume.


Whether you charge $200 or $20,000 is irrelevant. But, the real question is: "are you ready and able for both?" That's what it means to be REAL.

I have read this thread all the way through so far you have said a lot without ever saying anything.

Please in numbered lines (for those of us who have a hard time comprehending things) list the things that you believe makes one a real DJ.
 
You are right and if you talk in cirlces you will always come back to the same place without ever saying anything at all!
 
The same can be said about thinking in closed circles.

A perfect example of a numbered list is a recipe. As long as you read the back of the box every batch of brownies comes out the same - anyone can do it.

Is that where you want too set the bar for a real DJ?

I can't give you the recipe for the real DJs I know - because they were each made from scratch.


How many of the DJ skills you possses are rare talent in your area? What ingredients do you have in your DJ cabinet that the lay-person or DJ who plays sequential songs does not?

Anyone can make brownies from a box. But, most professional jobs involve a box of brownie mix PLUS one or more rare ingredient(s). How many of those potential rare DJ ingredients do you stock? If the answer is none - then you're just another box of brownie mix - not real.

Real is being capable of cooking with or without the box. Real means you get the job becuase even though 90% of what was needed is in the box - you're the one with the 10% that makes you the better brownie.

Ok, found a good one -- seems appropriate, considering this thread's contents (rated RR for language, although you can probably hear worse at the local WallyMart) -- can you tell I'm on a Woodstock kick this week...? :sqlaugh:

What is the purpose of your post in this thread, I could understand it if they were designed to make others think, I could understand it if they were designed to make a point. The problem is that neither of those designs are in your post on this subject.

But to clarify it for everyone, A real DJ is what an individual wants it to be, it may be the stiff in the Tux, it could be the kid in the sideways baseball cap, perhaps the guy spinning vinyl, it may even be the old guy with a computer full of outdated music!
 
Oh BTW Rick the poles you see by the stage were the canopy supports which were held by a crane on each side of the stage.

I wasn't there only guessing.

I was 14 at the time and began the pilgrimage but was waylaid in Stumptown West Virginia never did figure out why we ended up there!

That simply doesn't go far enough.


If you make it what you want it to be and end up whining that the public doesn't respect you as a "DJ" - then that's a clear example of being un-real.
 
Heck, we didn't even want to go there. I was with my Dad, Pat Moroney and his Dad Jim, in the motorhome -- on the way to a motorcycle race just to watch.

We just got stuck there, and caught up in all the traffic.

Kinda neat that I can say I was there now, but really had no clue at the time -- just remember music, naked people, and a funny smoke ;)

Dad and Jim (two very conservative folks), were having a field day pointing out all the commie hippies :sqlaugh:


That's why I'm a real DJ :)
