What is a good editing program for video?

My partners girl friend shot some video of the last event we did. It wasn't that great. The sound quality for the video wasn't that great and the actual video itself was poorly shot. I just got my camera back and next time I plan on shooting video and taking pictures with my camera. Can someone please tell me a good program to edit video. What do you use that works well for you?
 
Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 11 Production Suite [Old Version]

You can get it Amazon for $69. I use version 10, because I am still happy with it. You can add music tracks, voice overlays, sound effects, video effects, etc.

Bit of a learning curve for the computer challenged, but worth the investment in time.

Mix, have you tried shooting video with your camera at prior events? While most DSLR's do take great video if you've got a steady hand, there's usually a trade-off, and it comes in the form of lousy audio. Just preparing you for what may be disappointment. I'm not usually happy with my own footage using my Canon DSLR.

With that said, I use Sony Vegas Pro 11 for my video editing. Most of the time, I'm editing music videos for my school and church events.

I wanted other peoples thoughts on what to get and not just looking myself and not getting something good. Thanks for the input to those who mentioned Sony.
 
Windows movie maker it's free and easy to use. You're not shooting a major motion picture just a demo video

Nah -- maybe with the Live version, but I don't use that.

Find a copy of version 6, it does more than the current Live version. It's not easy to find though.

Sony Vegas is IMHO the best option, and in picking up an older version like 10 or 11 -- it's a fantastic deal. It comes with the Sound Forge audio editor, DVD architect, and a ton of tools and effects.

It's been quite a while but I'm sure I used other formats in WMM but I believe you are right you can only export WMV

he can search amazon as well and get better results or go to best buy
