What do you plan on purchasing next for your DJ business?

Nothing much will be added this year. I will grab a set of speaker covers, amp case and a new IMac to dj with. Business is picking up and I plan to save every dime from DJing this year. The bills will be paid from the day job.

I like them. They do get nice and loud but can sound harsh without proper processing. For a speaker in this range I would consider the Yorkville U15p or the EV ZXA5.
I got to tell you this John you look so much like a DJ friend of mine named Tony Motley that it's scary. Wr used to work together and he's hugh reason i got back into DJing. You two could almost pass for twin brothers.
Me i guess i'm burnt out from buying. My last purchase has been another DJ facade i picked up yesterday from Musically Yours. A store in Hackinsack, NJ. Great store that sells and rents equipment. Great stuff but you will pay for some of it. Yet i can tell you they carry top of the line stuff! I'm talking an EAW sub that was installed in this big club in Montclair, NJ just above Little Rascals comedy club. I mean this sub is so big that only place you would use this sub is in a big club that you're never going to move unless the club closes it's doors for good.
If anyone ever gets a chance to go to this store you should. Just so you can go wow! They are located at 283 Main St. in Hackinsack, NJ. Trust me you won't beleive your eyes!
I picked up the tops I planned on getting (JBL PRX612m) plus a small lighting rig (Chauvet 4bar, ADJ Revo 4, Chauvet Obey 40, Ultimate light stand). Also bought a Behringer 8" powered top to use as a small vocal monitor. Next up .. a new DJ mixer and maybe a Karaoke mixer and then on to replacing the subs
Might i suggest that you stick with the JBL subs that would match those tops so everything looks uniform. That's what i did and i bought the poles to mount the speakers on the subs and it's all good! Just can't wait to see what it looks and sounds like at a gig.
Yes, the PRx618S-XLF are my first choice, but I will use either my DriveRack PA or pick up a DR260, so the actual sub shouldn't matter (I won't be using the built-in crossover) as long as the sub sounds good. Will probably look at the EV, the QSC KW, the JTR Growler and the Danley TH-Mini (maybe they'll have powered JTR/Danleys by then). I'd like small, light and powerful. I know I'll have to compromise something.
My current subs (Yorkville Unity) are about 115# each and bulky to move easily (I don't have a ramp trailer). That and the back is looking for some relief.

Steve I like that sub. Never had the chance to hear one. Do you run 2 all of the time or would one be sufficient for most parties? I'm thinking of selling an LS 700pb sub for something else. Just don't know what I will replace it with.
I love them (I always use 2 with Unity tops), but they are more of a "musical" sub and not a "hit you hard in the gut" sub, like a double 18 would be. Phenomenal on live music, especially Jazz and acoustic. I run them both off of a QSC PLX3602, non-bridged, as power is normally in short supply, and I've found they sip more this way than when I tried them paired off a bridged 3102.
A big trick i learned is to watch how hard you push the subs. You can use 2 and don't have to worry about it being too much, so long as you watch the volume controls on your amp. You can run the volume half way on the amp or even lower and you'll be fine.
I know because i had a pair of Earthquakes and we used them for a werring in a room that was split in half and never pushed them to the limit. If we did then that would have been over kill. Some DJs will do that thinking the louder the sound is better. They think that will make their performance super impressive. All that will have some do is to either say it was too damn loud after they have left or ask you to turn it down.
I' ve seen DJs playing in a big club have the gains all the way up which eventually will ruin a system. It can be loud but if it's a really good system you don't have to go crazy with it. People will hear it and know that it sounds good. You turn it up all you want. That still won't hide if you suck as a DJ.
For a lot of gigs, 1 sub is sufficient. 2 subs doesn't give you twice the volume, it's about a 20-25% bump. I use 2 just because the subs make a nice base for the tops and the look is nicer .. not necessarily because I need 2. Knowing gain structure is important to getting good clean sound and keeping your system out of clipping. I've seen it mentioned a number of times, but maybe we need to make a sticky on proper gain structure in a system.
have you had a chance to test these speakers at a show? how many people do you think they can handle?
My next purchase which will be next week are a pair of EV ZXa1's top with a pair of the new ZXa1subs. I got to listen to then about a month ago and they are amazing. They plugged in my Android phone which has club and dance remixes. They rocked! The tops are 800 watt 8" and weighing in at 19lbs. The subs are 700 watt 12" weighing 46lbs. After chatting with a couple other Dj's that own them they said the vocals are crystal clear. And after the demo I was sold. A pair of top with a single sub can handle 175, with 2 subs the system can handle 250 with ease. By the way my purchase will be with Ben Stowe from NLFXPro.
