I have nothing going on Friday, but on Saturday I have a "SOUND ONLY" gig down in D.C. . I am providing a sound system with wireless microphones for the ceremony, They have strings for the ceremony and cocktail hour, so I don't need to play any music. Then, for the Dinner, I am providing a sound system with microphone for toasts, and playing light background dinner music. They have a band for the reception, so once dinner is done I can pack up and go. ...I have not done a sound only gig in years! It's a easy gig, and I'll be packed up and loaded out if the venue by 8:30/8:45 pm.

What do you have going on this weekend?

Are you providing sound for the band/instrumentalists too?

Not the band in the reception.

I have not been given specifics with the strings during the ceremony. I am dealing directly with the wedding planner...not the couple. I am pretty sure I am not though...usually Strings either play with no amplification, or they bring something small on their own. Some trios/quartets will bring a Bose Compact or L1 Model II with them for example.

3 Sweet 16's = $11k in revenue (my second biggest weekend of the year)

All are large productions, with lighting, tv's, photobooths etc., but my one for Sunday is actually a small production from our perspective. Just moving heads, co2 gun, and a montage creation. They've actually spent over 100k on this Sweet 16 and have brought in a major production company from NYC for certain aspects, including special performances that they flew in from Vegas. The birthday girl actually saw me at an event a month ago... dad called me the next day, cancelled their dj, and booked me lol.

Just clarify it with the planner .. as they may assume differently.

I have to provide A/V support for a local union function on Saturday afternoon 2 screens, 2 projectors, and 6 microphones. I could probably get away with 2 NX55s but I think I'll put 4 up just to play it safe. Fortunately I am able to setup Friday night I'm supposed to work till 1 on Saturday but they owe me some time I'll leave at 12:30 the event is only 2 blocks away from the station. I'll be out and home before 5PM with a little less than Taso's 11K LOL

I just don't get the point in spending that much $ on a birthday party. I think that just makes kids spoiled brats half the time. Hell, there are weddings that don't spend that much money. If you set the bar so high so young, it makes it kinda hard to beat later on I would think.
I mean Im happy that its great for business, but never would I ever spend that much on either one of my daughters. I think priorities are a little backwards.

It's not totally about the kid. It's largely about status symbol in the (adult) community. The same thing applies for mitzvahs. Parents are judged by their peers based on who gives the most elaborate party. It has relatively little to do with spoiling the kid.

that sucks

Yea, especially since it was a repeat client and I did not require them to pay a deposit. They found something cheaper and got off scott-free and screwed me in the process. Guess that's the end of doing any more events without deposits.

I'm doing a wedding at a venue that is new this year called District Winery. Really good looking reception space, and a great terrace on the DC water front. I'm looking forward to it!

I have received a Gig Masters Lead about 3 months ago where they were looking for a Wedding DJ, and the venue was District Winery.

It’s hard to understand how people spend money when one don’t have that kind of money themselves. Everyone values different things, and for some it’s about going over the top in everything they do.., simply bc they can. I don’t question them for it... in fact I admire their financial freedom. It’s all opinion though... just like a car... some view it as a method of getting from point a to b and nothing more while others who can spend 3 million and buy a Bugatti.

Ps the majority of my sweet 16 clients are in fact very mature and respectful. They are also well aware of all financial costs involved and are taught how to be responsible about spending.

It is simply matter of income level of the clientele as well as what they value.

I have performed many country club Sweet 16s where the clients were members (or the grand parents were members), but they still had a lower budget to work with. They might have spent MAYBE $6.000 to $10,000 total considering the country club, the food costs, and DJ, and maybe a photo booth on the Sweet 16 party, but no where near most of the sweet 16s that Taso's clients host.

Then there are those Sweet 16s where the parents have them at their home in the back yard, and spend $150 to $250 on the DJ. Total cost with food and decorations might have been less than $1,500, or even less than $1,000.
