Well the Knot refused my counter offer

To many ads? Support ODJT and see no ads!
Once you are set up on their directory, you won't hear from them until renewal time.

Maybe once you might have a "Account Success Manager" reach out to you to see how things are going. This person is really just a bull shitter who's job is to schmooze over the paying customers and make them feel like they are valued.

This is incorrect. I hear from my rep almost monthly. There are a ton of activities for vendors from the Knot as well. Lots of social opportunities as well.

It's all about reviews. The more/better your reviews are, the more work you will get. Sorry but comparing WW or The Knot to Craigslist is laughable. There are no quality leads from Craigslist. Last year, I received 529 inquires from the Knot. Take it for what it's worth and perhaps my results are typical but 529 QUALITY leads is huge.

There response:

I understand how you feel, however, we are The Knot. We have the largest audience of couples, and are the #1 brand out there.
no trials, sorry! Advertising is best measured in the long run. We want you to be success...in the long haul. A couple months is not a good gauge. Brides are on the site for an avg 12-16 months. You need to be there too.

I suggested extending the 6 months proposed in my original counter offer to 12 months based on their time recommendation, but they turned that down too.

Oh well.

OMG! An attitude like that and they (the knot) wonder why I don't spend money there? Sorry they think they are GOD and I'm inclined to disagree and believe that there are "other" paths to follow. If I came to the fork in the road where one was with them and the other was WW, I'd be putting it in park while I toss the GPS out the window and run over it a few times. AND I drive a big bus! But that's just me and I'm a little crazy like that.

I have "experienced things very similar to and along the lines you are saying in my own dealings with them, so I DO get it.
arrogant. They are not the end all of end alls. Neither is WW. I like to relax and think about weddings with sand in my toes..

There are many companies like that. You can choose to deal with them or not. I have never experienced anything like that in all the years I have been an advertiser. In fact, I get just the opposite.

Also, I have NEVER counter offered them. Would you like people making counter offers for your service? Not me. They are a business, just like you. If you don't like the price or can't afford the price... move on.

Just don't advertise with them. It's that simple.

thats the trouble - they are the top and no one will knock them off that

its either take it or leave it!

There needs to be a third party system for DJ's by DJ's and one that the littler guy could afford. Just my thought. Not a fan of WW or the knot.
Let's be realistic .. small DJ operations are of little value dollar wise to a 3rd party .. regardless of who runs it. If you want less expensive, then the social media ads are probably best (Facebook, Google, etc.).

No I stay away from all that nonsense. I don't need or want that headache anymore. Social media for me is not where I need to be. I can't reach people there. Tried it , wasted lots of money, didn't work, there has got to be something else. It's not for me. I tend to stay away from and totally abandon stuff that doesn't work after spending money on it and not being able to recover anything for it. I end up resenting people who I finally do spend money with and nothing happens with it other than they just took my money.

Then you're down to Craigslist .. not a pleasant place to hang out.

I have landed maybe one or two from Craig's list in 15 years. Not high dollar shows. one of them was a psycho, But I did the gig, and got paid. It was on and then of and then on and then off and they couldn't make up their minds if they were going to get married or not. I did that gig and then ran and ran.

I know that there is no silver bullet, I get that but, when a company promises you something and then doesn't deliver, I have to ask about the double standards of their not delivering everything they say but yet I would be expected to deliver everything I say. It would be ok for them to just take my money and be off with it, but it wouldn't be ok for me to do it without any good explanation.

Mike, no offense intended, but I think you did social media wrong. You tried to out-source the advertising and, understandably, got let down (and over-charged) from someone you trusted to make it work. The platform is solid but, my opinion, you have GOT to get your hands dirty and put your finger on the pulse of what works. For my money, I believe facebook ads and instagram are your best bets. If you want a fast start on instagram, you can buy 10k followers for $50. You'll lose a bunch of them quickly but on a 10k buy I have 1500 who are sticking with me, longer term. You consistently post fresh material and those numbers will equate into gigs booked.

Then I'm likely going to need to be shown a proper way. I've never even looked at instagram and wouldn't know what to do with it. The only social media I have ever used is facebook, linked -in and Shoutlife. And Shoutlife I hadn't used recently. I never really did anything with Myspace, (does anyone use that anymore for anything?) Truth is I have not been able to find anything that really "works" please believe me I want to, but it keeps coming up turnips for me. right now I would want nothing more than to have some amazing shows to report on but no matter how much money I throw at the problems , they just don't seem to work out for me. BUT I will say this: In the less than one short month of using DJ Event Planner, I got an inquiry already . So I will follow up on that. For me that's encouraging!

Rick is right on the head here but I will say if you don't have quality photos to use you might want to get a handfull before you play on Instagram. Facebook is dirt cheap advertising in reality but you have to get in front of an audience that needs you . I recently did couple of targeted boosted post for about $30 I reached 10,000 people. It was for an event we were promoting. I don't know the results because it wasn't a direct contact us promo but the event was successful

Do not pay for someone to do this for you this is easily done yourself with a little reading up front

Help Center

Advertising isn't a destination it's a journey especially in this business. You can't expect the phone to ring just because you drop an ad somewhere but if you drop enough over time it will come around

I looked at Instagram, Yes I need pictures but honestly I saw no navigation to it , do you just put pictures on it? Nobody hardly takes any pictures at any of my events or videos. I don't have time to do that stuff myself at a gig. I can't upload anything anywhere because it's got copyright stuff on it like music and all. Just some of the things I ran into previously.
