Weddings Weddings and "Recommended Vendors" fees?

I guess the final question is....

is this venue booked every week?

if so, no one will ever change their way of doing business.
if they are hurting for clients, things will change!

it's not much different than a dress code at a bar or restaurant.

Luckily I haven't experienced that here. There are venues that have preferred vendors lists and while they won't actively recommend anyone not on it to potential clients, they don't exclude others from performing there.

Exactly. And all the venues I work with that have approved list only policies are full every weekend and 50 weeks a year.

Was this in a court of law? I would like to read the transcripts. They are trying to create a monopoly with a conflict of interest is what they are doing.

How? There is a list. 2-3 caterers, 2-3 bakers, 1-2 lighting companies, 4-5 DJs, etc. You have a choice, just one off of their approved lists.

I don't have access to any legal databases. If you do, look up Sheridan vs Brown I think it is.

The following is NOT not an attack on you Bill. You did nothing wrong!

I am amazed by some of the stuff y'all encounter. I thank the Living Lord that I do not run into these situations.
If I did, they would soon find out that I am not into the "Roll over and play dead" kind of guy.
Next you know they will have a preferred vendors list for Providers of Cakes, Florists etc. If the Clients are stupid enough to buy into that nonsense it will continue to prevail.
I am just wondering if she found out about their "Preferred vendors" before or after she signed a rental contract. It will make a huge difference. Are they also supplying all types of entertainment such as a pianist, harpist, three piece classical trio or quartet? What if the Client was not happy with the performance, would she get a partial refund?
This reminds me of the "Sign Here" mentality. Most people sign without first looking or reading.

The places I know of have lists for everything. Cakes, catering, linen, decorators, planners, lighting, sound, dj, rigging, etc.

Mike, you may not know the answer to this since you do not own the joint. What happens if the Bride & Groom have a Special situation where they require lets say Ethnic Music that the Preferred Entertainment cannot perform?

:sqerr:Ok Don't sweat over the answer. I guess clients/customers can choose to go elsewhere. That is why I NEVER eat at McDonalds and some people do. Something for everyone I guess!

Many of the Casino Hotels that I play (about 5 of them) have 'Preferred Vendors' on their list and I'm on their list. I get a ton of weekday corporate event inquiries and wedding referrals.

In my market they don't get a kickback.

In my adjacent market, they want a kickback for most of the venues in the area; which is why it's been difficult to work in that city.

I want to be hired for my CREATIVITY AND TALENTS.....not how much the vendor can make on a recommendation.

Jim,
How would you feel if you wanted to play there and was not on their preferred list? Is this preferred list a suggestive guide or is it a mandatory/exclusive list from which the clients have to choose?

Hi Houstondj,

Thanks for commenting.

The list is a 'recommended' list to the prospect and does not reflect any decision that they HAVE to make. They can bring in their OWN talent if they wish.

Since most of the corporate clients at the casino venue are convention and out-of-state clients, this makes it easy to promote and recommend my services to them.

I believe that is handled on a case by case basis. Because I know of one corporate event that used a band (there is no band recommended vendor list, but they have the right to refuse any band performing there).

Well that explains things. I thought you meant an Exclusive Preferred list.

hi Alan, I checked out your site (topdisckockey.com) and it's the first time I saw the video "The truth about ipod weddings" It was one of the most painful things I've ever seen and does a great job illustrating the difference between an ipod and a professional. Well played sir!

In these economic times

I hope these folks are keeping their families fed sort of like the Beverly Hillbillies. I am so into making effort to qualified vendors but singling the list down to two or three preferred is assanine and intolerable when a client would love to spend way too much for your venue in the first place.:sqwink:

Like I said, they are venues that are booked solid for next year (2011) already.

These places are not hurting for business.
