I don't normally ask for help with song selections, but this is a very special wedding next weekend.

I just spoke with the B2B over the phone to find out that the weekend after their wedding, her new husband will be deployed overseas on Oct. 29. She has requested "my soldier is overseas and far away from me" songs. Those was her exact words.

Any ideas everyone; thanks for your thoughts!

I wouldn't play traveling soldier just in case you have not listened to the lyrics,
One Friday night at a football game
The Lord's Prayer said and the Anthem sang
A man said folks would you bow your heads
For a list of local Vietnam dead
Crying all alone under the stands
Was a piccolo player in the marching band
And one name read and nobody really cared
But a pretty little girl with a bow in her hair

Do they have to have soldier references or can the be distance references..

Especially if she is Jamaican, JAMAICA FAREWELL has a sentiment that...oh, I cannot type anymore cuz I'm crying already.

Man I love that song have you heard Jimmy Buffet's version..?

No, man, and the emotion that is stirred by Harry Belafonte's vocals in that song makes me not want to ever hear anybody else's version.

A man is leaving his girl...sob...the way he sings it...it's a MUST, now that I think about it.

"I'm Already There" by Lonestar has been played a lot in regard to the troops. there is also a version with sound bites from soldiers families included entitled "Messages From Home" version. I have it on MP3, but can't remember where I found the original.

I have the same feeling about the Belafonte version of Jamaica Farewell that VS has, just can't imagine a better version. He hooked it.

How about Leaving On a Jet Plane? And NO not the John Denver version. Use the Peter, Paul & Mary version. He may have written it but they do a better job. It has no military reference but the lyrics are perfect except "When I get back I'll wear your wedding ring.". They're getting married before but that is a minor difference.

Lilly Marlene, is a WWII song but absolute classic song of love and separation.

It is originally German but was sung by both sides. The lyrics varied but here is a stanza from the Marlene Deitrich version:

When we are marching in the mud and cold,
And when my pack seems more than I can hold
My love for you renews my might
I'm warm again
My pack is light
It's you Lili Marlene
It's you Lili Marlene

Good huh?

Give us some time we'll get more.
