Using the projector for a Monogram.

It is all in the type of projector you use. DLP and D-ILA have the best blacks.

I have an idea for you all. If the background around the writing shows up, why not then make a complete image with the name/gobo inside? Use your imaginations. For example,place your gobo inside this frame so it completes the whole image and voila, no other border with which to deal. When you project the B & G name on the wall, it will be framed. If interested, let me know and I can send some links to some great Frame Styles. You can edit and do your Photoshop Magic to make it look good.

The issue with big borders, is they stand out .. fine if you are projecting on a flat wall .. not as fine when you are projecting on a fluid background (people walking/dncing on dance floor for example) .. though it may be something to consider.

This is one I did this past weekend at the Loews Vanderbilt Plaza. Pink uplighting and the wall sconces were fairly well-lit at this time. The projector is sitting back by my speaker, which should put it around 80-90 feet (according to the room diagrams from the hotel web site). I could have sized it down but the client seemed to be well-pleased with the results. By the way, I believe it was about a 15 foot ceiling with medium-brown walls. 20 Chauvet Slimpar 56 fixtures were used in the room. The projector is an Epson, 2500 lumen, mounted on a tripod.

Here are a couple Links:

Take this one for instance you can doctor the frame color first, turn it sideways/landscape then prepare the middle. Image the signature/writing in the middle!

In a majority of occasions, I'm fighting with trying to maximize the sizing of the monogram against the space I have available to project it onto. I don't think the idea of chewing up even more space with a picture frame is a good one. Most surfaces are also not flat, nor white. For instance, those brown frames would've gotten completely lost against the brown wall I was working with last weekend. By the same token, I'll be projecting against a brown, wood floor this Saturday. The frames would not work there either.

Of course dark will not go well with dark. There are white Frames, Yellow Frames, pale gold frames etc. and the same projection space on a wall. A picture frame is designed to pull your focus into the middle section to see an image such as the "Gobo". Imagine a white wall behind the Head Table, nicely centered, it will look like a huge Picture Frame Hanging on the wall. Everyone is doing the same old same ole, why not set a trend and be different!

Go for it. Make it happen then come show us all how great it looks. I judge it a waste of time and I'd have to think that you'd agree that I'm not one who is closed to new ideas. Just non-productive ones.

I have visualized it. I also work with data projector monograms on a regular basis. I believe I have pretty good grasp on how it works in real life. Like I said, go for it. Or, would that dilute your service offerings too much?

Post one of your Gobo Files!

Post one of your Gobo Files!

There's a batch of them here: https://plus.google.com/photos/104949851951762302969/albums/5686364614405351249?banner=pwa

The issues that I tend to run into;

1) You need a small amount of border around the edge. If you trim it too close, sometimes it gets clipped by the projector. Trying to fit that frame into the needed border area is going to be problematic.

2) Depending on throw distance, you sometimes will need to increase the border size and decrease the actual logo size. This one was thrown at about 90-100 feet. IMG_8386.jpg
I originally made the graphic is an 800X600 with a small frame and large letters. I had to go back and reduce the font size by about 40% to make it fit the wallspace better.

This one was thrown from about 10 feet with a wide-angle projector (had to fit the projector behind the stage);

20 feet throw, from the side

30 foot throw from an in-house A/V system (projector mounted in the ceiling)

I did not mean it to be that every Gobo should have a Picture Frame around it. One could be used when appropriate.
