I would offer some songs but you know I havent the same moral fibre you do. Good luck and knock em dead. In no way was I referring to you bringing gang violence in saying Dead. Give em all you got.

Steve, I'm not sure if this has been said, but a word of caution to these "urban style" school dances. From the meeting, and from the students you could swear that 100% hip hop would guarantee everybody happy for the evening, but don't be suprised if you get a few staff members asking you to change the music style specifically because of the type of dancing (grinding) occurring. Have a few songs on backup that are popular, yet stray away from mainstream hip hop ready to play for a couple minutes. Songs like Womanizer by Brittney Spears, Circus, etc. will work. If you still get grinding on these songs your pretty much in the clear because your clearly not intentionally inducing the behavior.

Brian - thanks...I really do intend to stay as clear as I can from the urban/hip hop genre.....really focusing on trying to above 110 bpm. i want to be able to satisfy those that want that type of music...My plan is no more than 5 or 6 through the 2.5 hour event...

All I can say is if you play Hannah Montana or Jonas Brothers at the Junior High School I usually play at they will never want me to come back. They like what is hot and what is played on our local Hip Hop station like T.I-Whatever U like, Mims-Move if you wanna, Kanye West-Heartless,Lil Wayne-Amillie etc. There is no way anybody can stop kids from listening to what is hot out there unless you confine them from the public and that is not happening but that is my opinion. You might as well just play at a Christian event if you dont feel comfortable playing this type of music . This is just my opinion and I dont want it to get out of hand like it has I will just leave it at that.

Hey Steve, tough crowd. I am not piling on, I know nothing about Hip Hop/rap/etc (all the same to me), I am more of a punk/showtunes guy myself. But I sympathize! I enjoy a good show (like Avenue Q or Spring Awakening. However I would never, never, never let my middle schooler listen to it.

Anyway, just a note to say I sympathize. Sometimes we have to come down a little because of the world we live and work in. Just do your best. Maybe throw in some Christ Tomlin or Stellar Kart and see if anyone notices. ;-)

Sounds like a plan, but try to keep it balanced. The kids will want lots of hip hop. I remember middle school dances, and hip hop was played the entire time with some rock and country thrown into the mix. The only difference was that these events were either at the JCC or YMCA where the only chapperones were high school teenagers and a cop or two, plus a few staff from the building. No parents = no complaints

I don't think anyone has mentioned it, but Chris Brown's "Run It" may help.

That is funny, all ours were rock and punk with a little bit of hip hop and country.

Steve, you have plenty of sound. I regularly DJ 4 to 5 hundred middle school dances with one pair of FBT 4a's in the air and a RCF 705AS on the floor. Before I had the sub, I even used one pair of 4a's in the air and one pair of 4a's on the floor and the sound was great. We're talking a full size gym here but for middle school kids. I did half of a full gym for a smaller high school using one pair of 4a's for tops and a pair of 705AS subs coupled, the sound was crystal clear with very nice bass. I received many compliments from the kids who had complained to me prior the dance, in our meeting, that some other DJs had just too much bass and they found it annoying. They were actually wanting 'good' sound and not just a bunch of sloppy bass. I was impressed!
