Just picked up a Canon 5dMk3 and a 24-70 2.8L lens to add to the collection. This replaces a 5dMk2 I had and sold last year. I wanted another full frame camera, but the 6d wasn't fast enough (frame rate) for the sports I mainly shoot and the 1d was out of budget (way out).

I will be putting them to the test Friday night at our high school Post prom party (midnight-4am), since most of my shots will be without flash in a less than ideally lit gym.

Unfortunately not .. you'd think for $2K it should be. I usually shoot moving people, so my shutter speed is usually sufficient anyway to avoid hand held blur.

You really don't need IS on that lens...it's a nice lens and what I shoot all of our event shots with. For sports you might find AF to be a little slow (that's usually the biggest complaint), but if you're handy you will quickly learn to MF your shots quickly. The glass is great. I'm jealous of your MK3....I'd hoping to pick one up in the next year sometime...currently have a 5D, but planning to add the new one soon.

The 24-70 was mainly for indoor events. I shoot outdoors mostly with the 70-200 2.8L, the 70-300L and the 24-105L (mainly for group shots and such). I've been shooting basketball and volleyball mostly with a 50mm 1.4, but am hoping the combination of better low light capability of the 5d with the 24-70 will give me the ability to get a bit more creative.

Ideally, I would prefer the 28-105 in a 2.8 version, since I will lose some reach going to full frame.

Next up is a replacement for my 7d (the mk2 has supposed to have shown up since January) and will probably pick up a new 70-200 with stabilization to replace the current one.

I'm still usin' my Dad's Brownie Hawkeye.:p

You must get some amazing shots ... assuming you get everyone to freeze in place for the necessary 5-10 seconds.

The Canon 70-200/2.8 with IS totally rocks. Love mine! I occasionally use it with the canon doubler and while a little soft, I still get some pretty neat enlargements.
