Thanks Doc for getting it. Not saying the right approach was possible here only that something better might have helped. Oh and Mix you werent doing the gig so apparently your expertise wasnt considered.

You're right because i didn't even know what it was all about. All i knew was that it was supposed to bring house music to this part of Jersey. I was just giving some observations and saw some things i would have done differently. They were very good with the music they played. I just hope to get a chance to work with them and see if they would be open to some of my suggestions. I like to help when i can if i can.
I know some DJ's egos are so big they won't look at it as you're trying to help them but put them down and take over. Not my intentions at all.

You guys forget one thing. The DJs in these pics are in a different Category. They are not doing Weddings where Presentation is paramount. Nobody cares, those kind of Gigs attract a different crowd. They also are not looking for some future bride to hire them even though their friends might. Don't forget, its all about the money.

Just because they were not looking for a prospective bride does not mean one might not have been in attendance. I know for myself, any gig I do, even simple karaoke, my cords, cables are hidden, table covered, and everything tied up nice and neat. You never know who might see your setup, and the impression they get can go a long way. If they were just "all about the money". Thinking more long term on potential gigs that could come from this one, or every gig you do, they would have tidied up. Odds are they were just lazy with the setup and anxious to start the DJ'ing part. If they show the same attention and care to how they tear down store and move their gear, it will be torn up in no time.. then unusable and again out of "money" gigs.

I hear you my friend. However I have friends who are DJs that are just that way. They don't do Weddings and they don't take the time to tidy up their cables or put away their gear at the end of an event. There is a friend of mine who gets mad every time he comes to one of my Gigs and offers to help tear down. I roll all my cables and he just likes to stuff them in a milk crate. I always decline his help as he is always in a hurry to pack up and leave. He is always having to buy new cables and connectors.
I'm almost willing to bet it was not "about the money". Didn't Mix say it was volunteer?
Edit: Mix said it was a 'Charity' function. He would have to clarify if any of the DJ's received any monies.
I'm with Wes and Ron on this one - EVERYWHERE is about presentation, in the best possible manner achievable. You NEVER know where work will come from, nor what type of party it would be for.
Considering this was a party to fight gang violence, would you have a bride there? More than likely not - but you may have someone there with intentions for some other kind of party.
Dumb question time - when trying to get rid of violence, why would you say 'fight' - as in fight gang violence?

It was a charity event that hired 3 DJs and attracted a dozen people how much do you think each DJ was being paid? No pay means a lack of ability to buy gear and having to use what you have. I'm pretty good at math $0 and renting gear looks like a losing situation to me
There are alot of areas that those setups would be more than acceptable for any event. I live in one. My setup is much cleaner than most in my area but would pale in comparision to some I have seen on this board. I've seen setups here where they drape wires over top of table skirts because they simply don't see a problem with it. In alot of areas and alot of cases all the client is worried about is price and can you do it

I agree here too - which is why I said 'best possible manner achievable'. As long as you have guests, you have possible customers.
I learned on these forums to have a nice looking setup. That can go a long way. I used to think that wasn't a big deal. I just figured as long as i rocked the party it didn't matter what the setup looked like. All i knew back then was that my gear was top of the line professional and i was great at getting people to dance having a great time.
What believe today is that i never know who might be there at a gig and in the future be in need of a DJ. So today presentation is very important to me no matter what type of gig it is or where it is at.
