That's correct... I am a part of a few groups on Facebook but when I came across this site, I got a different vibe, a more positive one...so wanted to be a part of it. Thanks for allowing me in, and thanks Jeff for your patience and support

It's mostly positive here there are some days though

I've taken months to get around to participating.
A lot of you will know me, even though I'm not the ONLY DJ in New Zealand.
A lot of familiar names here. I did sightseeing and had dinner with @sawdust123 in Los Angeles in 2002. I have possibly met many others at Mobile Beat or maybe ARMDJS. And I remember how wrong so many of us were on the DJ Chat and ProDJ forums all those years ago, back when we'd argue our pointless perspectives to death.
The business still looks easy to so many, and that's why they buy some cool looking gear and go out and have a go. So many of them decide it's not as cool as they thought spending Saturday nights dealing with drunks, brides with very specific visions, and unappreciative, demanding guests.
Many start up, most give up, few in NZ have been around for more than a decade. I did my first "gig" at age 12, my first wedding at 15, and this year I turned 50 and still learning. One day, I'll be perfect, surely. Soon, I hope.

Hi All.
I'm 46, born, raised and live in Ireland. I've loved electronic music honestly since I was about 7 or 8 as my older brother and cousins used to listen to Jean Michel Jarre. I thought it was amazing.
Then had another life changing moment watching the UK TV show Top of the Pops in the late 90's. Essentially pre-internet days, you watched the show to find out what was number 1. Chemical Brothers "Setting Sun" went straight in at number 1 and they played the iconic video in full. It absolutely blew my mind that music like that existed.
A year or 2 after that I went to my first "rave" type night out and again that changed everything. We had decks in the apartment for a while but I didnt want to distract myself. Kinda lost my interest in music a little bit from roughly 2007-2014 lets say, was more into video editing and things like that.
Then from 2015 on I started my first playlist of songs I like on YT and my love for music has come back in a big way since then.
Bought a FLX4 last November 2024 but my laptop was too old and couldn't keep up with rekordbox so didn't use much until I got an m1 pro second hand in May 2025.
A completely random web post in early June for my small 20k town got me thinking. It was someone looking for DJ in October, they tried 3 or 4 people but they were booked out. Wait a minute there is THAT much demand for dj's in my town that 4 are busy on a seemingly random October weekend night?!?
So I'm coming at all this as a side gig first and foremost. I'm not going to rush into things buying equipment. In the last few weeks I'm practicing a lot of mixing, 2 X 35min "mixes" each weekday. I'm enjoying it.
I love "crate digging" i.e. finding new music and I would love for people to hear this music, but that is the dream for another day. For the next 2 months I just want to keep practicing to get better at mixing. Keep researching on here about what equipment to buy. For speakers and lights it seems that the good stuff probably wont have Black Friday discounts, but it makes sense to hold out until then.
Ive already bought some sneaky "essential" equipment already that wouldn't have seemed essential to me 20 years ago. That is a hand truck/trolley to move heavy equipment for €65 on aliexpress and I got music safepro earplugs for €30.
Sure I'll make a website for my DJ persona and put up some mixes eventually, but I am 100% going for the 50th/60th birthday, private parties, maybe weddings in due course, hell even kids parties. Taking requests, having fun, playing Taylor Swift, Garth Brooks, Rock the Boat, the Birdie Song etc. I just want to book gigs once I feel comfortable on the controller. I also work from home now, and getting more sociable wouldn't do any harm.

We all came into DJing through different means but at its core was usually a love for music. The oddity of the business is that most of us get paid by playing music to other people's tastes, not our own. That is even true for clubs and raves. Sure, you get to introduce some new stuff but it pretty much needs to fit the style. You don't DJ a rave and try to introduce a folk song. Anyhow, there is lots of good advice on these boards. Most questions repeat over time. The search function can often help you find an answer quicker than waiting for new reply.
