Both, as you can see.

Each master drive, has 3 baclkups -- 2 on other external drives, and one full backup on DVD. Drives have moving parts -- DVDs don't


When you rely on computers for a living, there are never enough backups, and it's cheap insurance

It's going to take a large stack of DVDs.. can you recommend a program for this purpose?

Takes about 50 or so standard DVDs to backup a full 250 GB drive. Takes a few hours, but well worth having your entire library on another recoverable media.


I talk to people all day, who have invested months in ripping their libraries -- seems only smart to spend a day and $25 worth of blank DVDs, to have a complete backup of your core library.

I strongly agree - you can never have "too much" backup! I double up on everything and vital data such as my music library, book transcripts and website work are all at least triple backed up...lol

I would surely hope that anyone who uses a 1TB drive would have all that information backed up on one or more addition drives. Same goes for a 500GB drive, so there really is no difference between HDD failure on a 500GB or 1TB, if you don't have them backed up you are screwed.
So I can't say I understand why you would shun TB drives.
Let's also not forget, that if you shove as many drives in your case as you can you will have more heat building up as well as less airflow which can create more heat issues. Heat can raise your chances for HDD failure.
Also, a hard drive failure does not necessarily mean you lost all your files.

Just throwing that out there.

Of course, I STILL don't know why DJs that don't do video need more than a 60 gig HD.

Large music collections. I have a very large music collection and that takes up a lot of space, then you need to consider that a lot of it is high bitrate mp3s or FLAC.

I remember those days, man loading data and programs in from a cassette tape was a pain, bigtime if your cassette deck couldn't handle the indexing. You had to pull the audio jack fast forward to the correct counter number rewind a little hit play verify the silence reinsert the audio plug, hit load, press play, and wait.

Nobody will ever fill a terabyte hard drive with music. You would be lucky to fill a 500 hd. I still say it is too big. Don't put all your eggs in one basket.

Actually just 25,000 Wave files at an average of 50MB per track would burn through a 1TB HDD rather quickly...

I have 600GB worth of music and it grows all the time. It's VERY easy to have that much music. I have music for myself as well as for DJing, so that adds to it. I also don't just have random songs, I have albums.

But I do agree. Don't put all that music on a 1TB drive and hope nothing happens to it. Put it on multiple backup drives and DVDs.
That way when one basket drops and breaks all the eggs you can still get those same eggs from another basket.

But it is VERY possible.

I have well over 1TB right now and I'm sure I'm not the only one. It's very easy to do when you store the WAV files.

I'm getting ready to upgrade my computer to have four 1.5TB drives in raid. 2 will be for the original files (3TB) and 2 will be for back-up (3TB).

but having online backup takes too long to upload and download

I have a server that holds 6x HDD's and each one holds a 1TB Hdd
so thats 6x TB's so far
all hot swapable

so I can add a lot more as I go and keep a HDD out when I dont want to use it
