Tagging My Music

well whatever works for ya is fine.... but, isolating the problem children might be difficult... but not impossible.

If you have it sorted at a minimum by year and genre.... that will make it all the more easy.

For example:

If you have all your 50s music in a directory called 1950s then use an automated tagger to tag every file with the year 1950 and nothing else new.

Same with if you have all your Rock in one directory... tag them all with just the Genre tag Rock....

If you have it all mixed together you're fawked.... at least with the auto tagging programs except for the ones that will read your file name and try to guess the right information from the internet.... for that see Rick.
 
Chuck,

Yer software should arrange the music for you, based upon the tag info in them.

If you are too lazy to tag them properly, buy vinyl :sqwink:



It IS your job BTW, to keep yer library up to date -- yer booking agent doesn't do that part... :sqlaugh: :sqrolleyes:
 
Joker, just confirmed what you stated about VDJ not changing the tag. Thanks for that bit of info. Not knowing might have tested my sanity at a later date. Joker, you have any idea of VDJ's rationale? So VDJ has an independent database which is fine but why not change the header?

AND Chuck, it really is simple, don't cha understand? Its changed but it isn't changed.

I don't know for sure but I'm sure snooping around the forums would tell ya....

I'm just glad that I didn't have 30,000 songs re-tagged thru VDJ and then have the DB crap out on me.... LOL

Since all my files are named the same way..... Artist - Song.mp3 I'd be willing to bet that's the naming convention VDJ looks for.... plus that's kinda a standard for file naming anyway.... isn't it?

Any DJ software or tagging software, should have a filename mask you can modify, for those tracks without tag info. Sorta like this:

%1 = Artist
%2 = Title
%3 = Album

etc.

AudioGrabber has it, Tag&Rename has it, Rockit has it -- funny how all 3 of those are so similar, in some respects ;)


Anyway, I use the opposite: Title - Artist.mp3 for filenames.

Reason is, if I use Windows to search (or any program), I most often search by title. Since title comes first in my filenames, the search is exponentially quicker, since searches are performed left to right. :)

Good point.... however, since my karaoke software looks at it the other way.... I just continued that process into my DJ music but dropped track numbers from the file name.

Either should work... it's just a matter of preference and the software you use.
 
Absolutely -- that's the reason for having a mask, so different end users can change it :)

Most folks I know search by artist, so it makes sense for them to have artist first. For those like me, I've just always done title, so easy enough to change the mask to reflect that for the individual.

I always assumed VDJ had a mask -- although quite frankly, they haven't sent me a copy to evaluate lately... :sqlaugh:

I'll have to check that out... I'm sure it's someware in the setup.... if at all.
 
I don't think VDJ has a mask, because, as has been pointed out, VDJ isn't a tag editor. The data from a VDJ scan is saved in a local database, not in the ID3 tags. I've grown accustomed to this, and prefer it.

But, I manually manage my ipod too.

if you have the mp3 or file that is done like

<Artist> - <Song Title>.mp3

then why even have the id tag on it
winamp reads it without
so does most other software

its only really needed if you want extras added in the id

no thanks mines in the Directory of the CD and is shown as
<Artist> - <Song Title>.mp3

i'll keep mine simple
 
Rob any decent Tag editor should be able to populate tags from the file name to fix the files that VDJ didn't. I tag all my MP3s with Easy Tag on Linux except for when using fix tunes because it's the best Tag Editor I've ever used, I actually understand it and options aren't hidden or lost in menus.

I used to have a great app for windows too -- ID3TagIt I believe it's no longer being developed but last time I looked still available for download.
 
I'm another one that doesn't see much use or need for the tags. Except for maybe BPM but, then again, I'm not a beat mixer either. To me, it's just a bunch of useless information I don't need on my hard drive taking up space.

But I'm sure many would see my hard drive like Chuck's, a cluster you know what. When I worked for the multi op using minidisk, I got used to year. The newest stuff was on the higher numbered disk. I pretty much use a directory format of c:music/year/genre for most music but do have "special" directories like c:music/dinner/guitar or c:music/dinner/piano but also have a few by artist such as c:music/jimmy buffet or c:music/rock/ac dc or c:music/crooner/artist. Granted I do really need to clean this up and move some things a bit becuase I do have a mess of some stuff that needs to be categorized a bit better like that c:music/misc itunes.

I'd really love a utility that would look at my music and tell me what year is was produced or released.
 
OK Chuck...I've cleared my schedule. Send me a round trip ticket from Maryland to your paradise and I'll spend the week fixing your tags.

wow,,, I thought someone would take me up on it,,,, just shows me what a PITA tagging must be! LOL :sqbiggrin:
