Silent disco?

You missed the whole point of silent disco. It's not just about receiving the music through headphones . Its about have multiple DJs playing on separate channel so you have a Choice of Music, then each DJs has a color associated with them that lights up in the headphone who everyone knows what channels you are listening to. A simple press of one button selects the channels. Since they have a short attention span its perfect for kids. When one group reacts you can see the flow changing via the LED lights on the Headphones. Trying to jury rig something won't get you the same results. Even for what I do I could have used my FM transmitter and had everyone use FM Headphones. It was not seamless and much more complicated on the users end.

You could still have multiple DJ’s, each DJ would create a unique stream. You wouldn’t get the different colors, but it would still allow the guests to switch DJ’s pretty easily... Just Tweet the links with each DJ’s link and name, and it’s just one click to change the stream (link).

As Bobcat said, the multi-channel part is still possible with a smartphone setup .. I guess the question is do the participants expect the multi-colored headphone thing or could one see if it would be effective with streaming first. Seems the multi-channel headphone setup would cost $5K just to do 150 kids ... if it's a trend on the downswing, not sure if it would be smart to invest.

Yes, the color coded channel lights is the standard now. It's a niche market not for everyone. It's not decreasing. One company launched a program 2 years ago using the headphones for zumba & fitness programs. 5k for 150 Headphones is still high. I didn't pay that near much but I do have connections. My suggestion would be at see it done correctly first, then see if it might work with your clients & markets. I use my headphones also for my home Outdoor System. For the residential Outdoor Movie or private party market doesn't pay well effect for me to use the headphones. Colleges, private prep schools, yes they have the budget.

The only other DOWN SIDE (besides the color thing) is that streaming to smart phones would allow people to play the music WITHOUT the headphones, and there will always be jerks who will do that.[emoji1]

Remove the most important part leaves you with a bunch of people listening to streaming music on their cell phones using ear buds. I’m a good salesman in a market that I will just about buying anything and I couldn’t sell that to my clients.

It seems the "colors" would simply identify to others what you are listening to (again, assuming one could make an app work with multiple sources). If that is the most important part, then yes, it might be a tough sell.

I think you could even figure out a way to display a unique graphic (in different colors) for each DJ on the phones, since you’d actually be streaming video with the audio. The problem that you’d have is people who didn’t have (or bring) their phones.

All valid ..

I did find this company that makes specialized hardware for similar purposes. App is free and allows you to select from multiple channels. Broadcasts locally over WiFi. Single channel is about $500, 4 channel version is about $1500 ... Stream Audio Over WiFi for Churches, Fitness, Bars & More | AudioFetch - (https://www.audiofetch.com/)

All I can say is good luck with all of these alternates. I can’t see anyone paying much if any. I can see it now talking to the host. Have everyone bring their cellphone & ears buds. We are going to stream the music to their phones thru a app. So make sure everyone charges and brings their phone. Again, I suggest actually seeing a couple shows first.

But if you can offer a lower cost option with no requirements for headphone management .. might it not be an option for more cost conscious customers? Doesn't appear to be any lower audio fidelity .. in fact, might even be better as a digital stream. Since the vast majority of these types of attendees already have a phone, I would think it might be an option .. YMMV.

NO... You give them free earbuds with your logo on the case... Party favors. Everyone brings their phones nowadays anyway.[emoji1] At least if they’re streaming music on it, they aren’t talking on it.[emoji1]

Please send me the video when you do a event. I see so many
Sales, usability & technical issues with these method for a party it makes my head spin. But what do I know the National company is only 4 booths away from me at this trade show. Tonight I checkout the mobile roller skating showcase. I've seen the ice skating but not roller skating.

OK... Time for me to be the Debbie-Downer.[emoji1]... What kinda band width do you need to simultaneously stream to 200+ phones??? I don’t know the answer; I just have my doubts. Even if you wanted to test the streaming option out to see if it would work; who has 200 phones, or even 200 friends with phones?[emoji1] Only a REAL fool would even attempt to do this for an event without knowing for sure that it would actually work... So I’ll wait for @steve149 to try it out and let us know how well it works.[emoji1]

Not really my market, but if I can find a single channel streamer under $300, I might test it .. so I shall scour eBay ..

This is interesting. I wonder if it'll make a comeback. Alot of rinks have closed up - not enough (or barely enough) patronage. For the successful ones that I've seen, the owners are self-invested, meaning they themselves are in it - as in Roller Derby or figure skating or the like.

I think @tunes4046 still has his rink ... How is it doing (I know it wasn't meant to be a commercial endeavor).

Got a chance to check out the mobile skating ring. It looked pretty nice I'm not sure the max size they can make it. The only issue that I saw was the availability of skates, they didn't seem to have many pairs. So they had to do different shifts. I would've actually thought you would have twice as many skates that would fit on the rink so one group could be suiting up as the other group skated. Only got a chance to stay a few minutes as I had to drive home but it looked fun. I used to skate all the time when I was in school & college.
