Fellow Dj's,

I am currently using 2 of the EKX 15SP Powered Speakers, I have them mounted on tripods. My question is I currently have the master gain level at -3db on the speaker, the other gains are set in the middle. but I wanted to see what is the appropriate volume level to have it at. These are powerful speakers but sometimes I want to pump up the volume but scared that they will clip.

I want to be able to set it at a good volume level along with my dj controllers and Mackie mixer. Please let me know if I need to provide any other information so you can let me know.

Thanks.

Appropriate is relative. Need to look at the end-to-end gain staging.

You want the input to the mixer (channel input gain) to be at a point that you just hit limit on peaks. Then with the channel fader at unity (0 on a linear fader - usually about 75% of the way up), and the speaker at Unity Gain (0 on the knob), you'd adjust the output level from the mixer to get the max volume you want, then back down the channel fader as necessary.

If you aren't getting enough volume, then I would start with the output level from the mixer before I moved the gain on the speaker from unity. The only time I set the speaker level knobs is if the speakers themselves are slightly different (my RCF EVOX has one stack which needs the speaker level set a smidge higher than the other to get the same level).

ok so first set everything at default and raise the volume on my mixer and then dj controller and speakers?

I'm also assuming you mean the EKX 15P, as the 15SP is a sub and usually doesn't go on a tripod :)

If it were me, I would ..

Get the signal from the source (laptop/CD/etc) up to maximum level (just hitting red at maximum peaks) using the input gain controls at the top of the mixer channel.
Then set the channel fader to unity (that may be tough on a DJ mixer as my Denon MC6000v2 has no values - I'd shoot for about 75% up)
Then set the speaker input trim on the back of the speaker to it's mid position (on the EKX, it's at 12:00)
Then I'd set the master output from the mixer around half-way and then the master volume on your EKX to the desired ultimate volume point.

Because the EKX has both a level control and a master volume, you'll need to see whether adjusting the output level from the mixer (master out) or the master volume on the EKX gets what you want.

When you get the maximum level you want, then bring down the fader on the channel to the level you want most and play with just that knob or fader.

Do you have a driverack or eq in the signal chain? I had to remove my driverack and put in a dbx 31 band eq and adjust the gains WAY down in order not to limit.

I have been told by EV that these speakers limit on hot gain input. Turn down the gain going in and adjust the gain at the speaker.

Hi Scott, welcome - did you intro yourself in the intro thread?
