I've been plowing Rick with questions, so I think I should leave him alone for a bit. BTW, he's great at responding to emails!

I'm considering switching from good old Red 5.2 to Rockit. For those that use it, what do you use - just a keyboard or a controller?

If you use a keyboard, how easy is it to map?
 
The key mapping is extremely simple. Rockit will do everything Red can do and more (the tagging feature is the best). The trick is finding a skin that you're comfortable with so the transition is a happy one. Rick has many free skins on his site as well as links to free skins I have created.

Actually, depends on whether I am sitting or standing (I am usually a sit down DJ).

If standing, my first preference is a touch screen, or touch screen overlay, with my Denon 4500 as second choice.

If sitting, a full sized keyboard and mouse (I despise laptop keyboards).

You can get them to go over an existing monitor, to make it into a touch screen :)

Google "touch screen overlay", and you will find a number of places that sell them, for various sized laptops and monitors.
 
Or, you can just get an HP TouchSmart -- which is my next purchase. :)

Actually would of had one already, had not the storm blown up my fridge... :sqerr:


All in one computer, that looks like it will be great for DJ and jukebox use...

I'm doing some last minute tweaks now, and should be building the final install in the next week or so...


BTW, since hardly anybody reads my manuals, it is coming out of the install download -- I need the space for the new skins (4.1 should come with 8-10 skins pre-loaded). The manual will be available as a PDF download on the website, which makes it easier for me to update as well. :)

No, you have to wait for 4.2 for that... :)

4.2 is going to focus on two areas:

1) Tweaking our decoder, so we can add a lot more stuff like that.

2) Full jukebox functionality, so it can also replace our RockBox software, which is used for rental jukeboxes (great DJ moneymaker, BTW :) ).


There's quite a lot of neat new stuff in 4.1 though... ;)
 
Actually Rick, I reference your handbook often. However, having it as a seperate download does make sense in terms of updates.

All I want is that beautiful retro skin with the wood grain and Teac style buttons you posted a couple of months ago.

Hey...just got back from a visit to Google...those touch screen overlays are not as costly as I thought they would be. Rick, how does that work for RockIt...is it something you map or something you can only use with certain skins?
 
Touch screens have nothing to do with Rockit -- it is a Windows thing.

Their drivers talk to Windows, so any control on screen becomes the same as if you were using a mouse, and clicking a button :)

I don't have any overlays, but I have a few customers who use them with the jukebox software I do, and they love them.

Also, ProDJPC sells touch screen computers just for DJ work, and they are rack mount, all in one units as well, if I recall correctly. Paul Gormley is the guy to talk to there -- very nice, and very helpful. I worked with him and Ryan at one of the shows :)
 
Wow, I just watched a short YouTube video promo for the HP Touch Smart. I want one, but it doesn't seem that they are available for purchase yet. Very cool and we have waited way too long for a mainstream product like this. I hope other PC manufacturers jump on this concept too. My next PC will have a mouse and a touchscreen finally, and maybe Rockit too. . .

edit: I found one on Amazon.com
 
NewEgg has them on sale (at least they were the other day, for $1450).

The 506 model, is the one I want -- it's got pretty good specs :)


They are essentially meant to compete with iMacs, only using Vista (64 bit version -- which is honkin' fast).
