Reworking My Large System

WOW!!!... How can one little old man make such a BIG mess???[emoji1] I spent most of this evening cleaning up the mess I made working on this project; mainly in the garage. It was UNBELIEVABLE the amount of saw dust, metal shavings and other stuff I swept up out there tonight. Still only have half the garage cleaned out, the other half is cluttered with tools and tables and power tools, as well as the hand tools, boxes of screws, wood, and all the other stuff I bought thinking I might need it. Now I need to put all this stuff away... SOMEWHERE[emoji1]... hopefully where I can find it again when I work on my next project.[emoji1]... Well... maybe not my NEXT project. I promised my daughter I would build her a bicycle from the bike parts her EX had left in her garage from dismantling (destroying) a bunch of bikes (including hers). Don't worry; I won't be posting my progress on that project in this forum.[emoji1]

Got a good test in last night on my new Large System. I'm mainly testing the computers, but the Controller is new too. As you may recall, the controller I bought for this system was an open-box demo unit, but never owned. The Nano computers haven't been used since they were set up a couple of months ago. I tested the DJ (music) PC for a little over 4 hours, playing music in Traktor non-stop. No significant heat or any issues at all so far.[emoji4] I need to run many more of these tests on both computers before I'll feel comfortable using this system. The nice thing is... It's REALLY quiet. My old Large System had two 1U rack-mount computers with cooling (case) fans and CPU fans, plus there were four large fans mounted on the back of the rack. I have NONE of those in this system. Now the question is; is that gonna be a problem?[emoji4]

Seriously Bob, looks good. Very clean looking portable setup. Are you able to go up stairs solo with it OK? Is it very heavy?

I also have to use an external keyboard/tracking pad. I hate having to extend my arms and lean into a computer to type. Also, I don't like to have the display up so close as it is harder for me to see. I use a Logitech k830 keyboard which can connect using either bluetooth or USB. I like that the buttons light up so it's nice in a dark environment and you can turn it off or set the brightness level. Being right handed, it's nice having the compact tracking pad on the right side, unlike on most laptops in the center which is uncomfortable for me.

Thanks Freddie.[emoji4]

As for going up stairs with it... Not likely. Two people could do it, but I don't have no partner.[emoji1] Maybe I could call JJ the DJ from NJ when I need help?[emoji1]

I have a keyboard similar to your K830... Mine is the K400. Same size and layout, but no illumination. I use it with the HTPC in my living room, and it's great. However, I'm not crazy about touch pads for doing anything serious.[emoji4] We'll see about the trackball. So far, so good.[emoji4]

Maybe you should build a storage cabinet for all your tools

So now that the (Large) System is finished, the project (and this thread) is over; right?... WRONG![emoji1] Testing is ongoing, and though it's going well, there ARE a couple of issues I'll post about another day. Tomorrow, however, I need to go through my receipts and try to figure out how much this project cost me. I did a REALLY cr@ppy job of documenting my costs. Fortunately, my accountant wife kept all my receipts, pulled them all together, and organized them for me to go through. Unfortunately, most of the receipts have both business AND personal purchases on them, so I need to go through each one, line-by-line, and list the business purchases in a separate spreadsheet.

I know I went WAY over budget. Not really a very wise expenditure.[emoji4]Upgrading your controller, changing to a split rack, or adding a facade don't really justify a price increase. The new Large System won't sound any different than the old one, and except for the facade, there really aren't any new features, and none that benefit a client. The REAL benefit is to ME.[emoji4] Having the split rack that I can lift into the minivan by myself (without the aid of a ramp) is a big plus. The reduced setup/tear down time will be nice too... just maybe not as MUCH of a time-saver as I would have liked. Having the same model of controller in both my Large and Small Systems will also simplify things for ME.[emoji4]

After I complete my cost spreadsheet, I will post the results here... as embarrassing as it might be.[emoji1] You guys need someone else to beat on anyway.[emoji1]

I've found these things easier to digest if I don't actually know the total cost ... and if I don't leave receipts for my wife to find .. :)

Well... ya kinda gotta do it for TAX purposes, ya know?[emoji1]

My budget was $2000, and I'm pretty sure I exceeded that by 50% (maybe more). I stand here and look at it and wonder... is this thing worth $3000???[emoji1]... Uh... nope... probably not.[emoji1]

For the limited gigs I do, I have plenty to write off that doesn't arouse too much suspicion (music, liability insurance, etc.) ...
