When you are spread out over half the width of a gym with 8 scanners these were the old 218's and 812's not the light weights of today, spin and pukes, 30" mirror ball with hot shots or stingers mounted with them and pars (not centrally located) setting up speaker "stacks" which maybe 16' tall (not on poles) with one amp for every two drivers and 24 drivers plus satilites so add in 4 more drivers (14 amps totalling 20,000 watts). Plus CD DJ rig with Computer rig, processing rack, taping down and hiding wire runs which maybe as long as 100' becomes a major time expenditure.
Now will the setup still look good yes it will, however taping and covering all the wires would become a huge headache. Granted I have down sized some since those days but I am still capable of almost that much setup.
It is a matter of where and how you run your wiring not if you tape it down or carry a bunch of rubber runners to cover them. The point is to keep them where they as as invisible as possible and out of traffic areas where they would be a trip hazzard, if I had to make a run in a traffic area then yes it would be taped down (and taped down well).
