I found a local deal for a Pair of Peavey 100P speakers that look to be in near new condition for $500 for the pair including stands. So, any comments?

I was surprised reading the description that the internal power amp is only 200 watts total. I'm pretty sure those cabinets can take a lot more power than that at least the passive ones can. Heavy for a 10" cabinet at 36 pounds. My EV Sb122 subs weight that.

Seems like a decent deal, but I've never heard the small Impulse. Heard a couple of passive 15" Impulse and they sound good, very rugged too.

Wiz,

I have a bunch of the Impulse 100's (just not the powered ones) Yes they can handle a lot more power than the amp they have in them supplies. Now for a little news, screw the Peavey powered speakers, I have had nothing but headaches from them.

Well that goes for any Powered speaker I have ever owned or used, nothing but problems waiting to happen!

I've never owned or used powered speakers. I do like the idea that I can walk in with a pair of speakers and only a mixer and my laptop. I really don't need more gear, I'm a gear addict and I'm addicted to good deals.

Well... a pair of stands would run you $100.00 or more if you bought them new.

I'm with Steve ~ have heard and read far too many horror stories about active cabinets of several brands to invest in them. For the most part, active molded boxes are simply glorified stage wedges. If you go with active versions of plywood cabs, you're talking about some substantial weight to lift.

I'm in agreement with the two (other) old farts :sqlaugh:

Active speakers are overrated, IMHO. Too many potential things to go wrong.

I use them in my office and studio, but probably wouldn't on the road. More things to go wrong, no redundant backup, more cords to plug in, blah, blah...

Having a few amps in the rack (even if bi/tri-amping), always gives you a fall back. Odds are, unless yer Cam, yer not gonna blow a passive speaker, and if an amp blows, you have quick and convenient access to yer rack, without interrupting the audience.

If yer blowing passive speakers on a regular basis -- you should look for another line of work -- cause you suck at sound reinforcement... ;)

Now I'm working on a few beers right now so forgive me BUT passive or active ya got the same parts. The difference is the access to the parts and signal path.

Some time ago one of our group bought a bunch of (big honkin') passive speakers and the setup came with a really neat cross over / limiter / compressor / etc. (not dbx) but it was really neat and packaged in one rack space and the first question was hey guys, how do I hook it up? Let's face it if you have to ask that question, maybe you shouldn't have bought the gear. Lots 'o people were saying chuck the processor and I'm thinking no no it cost nearly two grand and is really cool, give it here.

Active speakers are perfect for the less technically inclined (or those that don't want to be). It's all the same crap inside the box. It's just that if any one of those items in the signal chain take a dump you're SOL. Then again as Fred and I have discussed ad nauseum, purchasing a more complex system than you have the technical chops to operate and adjust gives you that many more places to screw the pooch or make it sound lousy by mis adjustment.

In the end, a man has to know his own limitations. Active speakers have their place, just not on present company's equipment list.

They would have to come with 5 pair of stands to make it a deal.....

I've never used the powered Impulse speakers but I have usd the passives and I wouldn't pay a dime for them

And I agree with the other three Powered is a disaster waiting to happen

I had 6 yrs of good service from my pair of powered with many compliments throughout the run. YMMV!

Jeff,

I own six pair of Impulse 100s, 3 pair of Impulse 200s and two pair of Impulse 500's all passive, one pair of impulse 200Ps, one pair of JBL Eon 15s and the 200Ps and Eons are the only ones I don't care for.
What was it about the Impulse passives that you found lacking?
