Pc question

I've had this file on my desk top for sometime now. It contains all kinds of stuff that I have saved. A number of files are ones that I copied and pasted and contain only text. Recently I tried to open some of these files and a window opens up that says "select the encoding that makes your docuement readable. It then has text encoding and shows 3 choices. Window default is checked. It then has a section called preview under which are lines of y's with 2 little dots over them and some other symbols. It then has page break and under that column break several times with all kinds of weird symbols.
I have no idea what all of this stuff is, but I need to open these files.
Anyone have a clue? Thanks

In addition to what I already mentioned, here's some of which that is listed. Makes no sense to me.
Is it possible the files were saved on xp on an external and then transfered over to a new pc laptop with vista????????????????
